The iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad have already made Apple a huge player when it comes to gaming, with the touchscreen devices proving to be stiff competition for handheld consoles such as the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. However, two faces headed to the Apple camp would suggest the Cupertino company wants to get even more serious about gaming.
Citing unnamed sources, an MCV report reveals that Nintendo UK’s former head of PR, Rob Saunders, left the company to fill a newly created position at Apple, where he will purportedly to work with PR for gaming content on iOS. Saunders worked with Nintendo for 7 years and is said to have been deeply involved in launches for both the Nintendo Wii and the DS.
Joining Saunders will be Nick Grange, a PR director for Activision Europe, who has also worked for Electronic Arts and Microsoft. Sources claim Grange will focus on iPad hardware as opposed to gaming on iOS in general.
If these claims are true, it’s bad news for Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo have already described Apple as “the enemy of the future,” and while the company attempts to get ahead with glasses-free 3D in its new handheld, the huge difference in game prices and the additional functionality of Apple’s devices is proving to be the deciding factor for many.
