Apple TV+ revealed Friday that Schmigadoon! will sing and dance its way onto the streaming service this summer. The comedy is a parody of iconic musicals, and is executive produced by Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live fame.

The series follows a couple trying to reinvigorate their relationship with a backpacking trip. They stumble into the magical town of Schmigadoon in which everyone is living in a studio musical from the 1940s. Then the couple finds they can’t leave the town until they find true love.

Schmigadoon! brings some comedy chops

It stars Cecily Strong, who joined the SNL troupe in 2012, and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on that show. Other acting credits in TV and film include the reboot of Ghostbusters. The upcoming Apple TV+ series also stars Keegan-Michael Key. He won an Emmy for his work on Key & Peele, and he was a cast member on Mad TV. Other shows Key appeared in include Parks and Recreation and Fargo.

And don’t overlook that screen-gems Alan Cumming and Jane Krakowski are  set to appear in the first season.

Schmigadoon! is co-created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Paul serves as showrunner, and wrote all of the original music for the series. Barry Sonnenfeld directs.

Apple TV+ didn’t give an exact release date for the upcoming series, just saying it will “make its global debut this summer.”

Plenty to look forward to on Apple TV+

The Television Critics Association Winter 2021 Press Tour is going on, and Apple used the opportunity to unveil plans for multiple upcoming shows, including Schmigadoon! That includes details on Mythic Quest season 2, an office comedy with a gaming twist, which will start this spring. And Physical will be a dark dramedy about the 1980s aerobics craze premiering in summer. Apple TV+ also announced that its adaptation of the classic novel The Mosquito Coast will debut in April.

They’ll join over 50 series and films, either available now or coming soon already on the streaming service.. There are thrillers, crime dramas, comedies and documentaries. Apple TV+ costs $4.99 a month.
