GoPro is expected to reveal its next action camera in time for the holidays this year and while few details of the device have surfaced, an alleged video of the upcoming device may have just revealed some major new features.
A short, nine-second video posted to Vimeo appears to show the back of the GoPro Hero 5 as part of a tutorial showing how to connect a smartphone or remote to the device. If the video is authentic, it appears that the entire back of the action camera will be a touchscreen.
GoPro added a touchscreen to its Silver Hero 4 model, but the GoPro Black Hero4 and GoPro Session camera didn’t come with the option, forcing users to line up shots via an iPhone. By making the back a touchscreen, it looks like GoPro will ditch the bus connector that allowed owners to attach an LCD screen or extra battery pack to GoPro devices.
The video appears to have been discovered in the GoPro Android app, according to The Verge which was able to find it in the latest version of the app’s Android Application Package “add_camera_hero5.mp4”.
Also seen in the video is a reference to a device called a “GoPro Sniper.” The company doesn’t have any trademarks under that name, but it could be a codename for an upcoming special project its working on, like the autonomous drone that supposedly leaked last week.
