Apple is continuing its focus on music with a new Music Memos app and a major update for the existing iOS app, GarageBand.

Inspired by Voice Memos, Music Memos lets users record song ideas on their iPhone in a high-quality, uncompressed format, then name, tag and rate them to start building a library of different concepts. Better yet, it can analyze rhythm and chords of acoustic guitar and piano recordings, then quickly add drums and a bass line to provide quick backing tracks to match the feel of a song.

On top of this, Music Memos can also provide basic notation displaying the chords that have been played; then making the tracks openable in GarageBand or Logic Pro X for further development. You can also share tracks via email or using the Apple Music Connect channel.

“Musicians around the world, from the biggest artists to aspiring students, use Apple devices to create amazing music,” said Phil Schiller in a statement. “The innovative new Music Memos app will help them quickly capture their ideas on iPhone and iPad whenever inspiration strikes.”

GarageBand, meanwhile, adds new Live Loops and Drummer features, along with support for the plus-sized iPad Pro display and 3D Touch capabilities of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. There is additionally an expanded selection of amps for bass players, new simple EQ, and more.

No wonder Apple is musicians’ device makers of choice!
