This app will tell you if you’re going to die in a plane crash

Sometimes it seems like there have been a lot of plane crashes lately. Between Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17/a>, and Transasia Airways Flight 235, it sometimes feels like there’s never been a worse time to fly.

Of course, that’s not true at all. There’s statistically almost zero chance at all of you dying in a plane crash, no matter how often you fly. And now there’s an app, specifically dedicated to assuaging your fears of dying in an aircraft.

The app is called ‘Am I Going Down?” and it’s a pretty simple app. You simply enter in your departure, destination, airline, and aircraft, and then it tells you what the chances are based on those parameters that your plane is going to come crashing out of the sky.

The odds, as it turns out, are all stacked in your favor: on my last flight, the app told me that my chances of going down were so astronomical that I would need to take it every day for almost 15,000 years before I could expect it to crash. Of course, anything can happen, but those chances are actually pretty low.

The app was designed by Vanilla Pixel, a London-based developer, and comes up with its calculations based on historical data from the NTSA and International Civil Aviation Organization. So when it tells you you’re pretty safe to lift off, you can probably trust it.
