Lumena beats you senseless with rhythm

Lumena

Once again, I’m here to tell you about a little minimalist game that has completely kicked my ass.

Lumena by Elevate Entertainment
Category: iOS Games
Works With: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
Price: $1.99 (promotional price, reg. $2.99)

It’s called Lumena, and it doesn’t look like much until you play it and fail in like two seconds. And then you try again, and again you fail because the game is, in fact, so minimal that it doesn’t even bother to tell you how to play it. But after a while, you figure it out (it’s not really that complicated), and with newly found confidence, you give it another shot. And you lose in five seconds.

But stick with it because it’s way better than I’m making it sound.

Here’s the deal: You have a ring of colored panels and a ball in the middle. Awesome music plays, and maybe the panels move around a bit. Your job is to flick the ball to hit the orbiting lights. If you miss, you lose. If you run out of time, you lose. If you hit, say, a blue light when the ball is yellow? Yeah, you lose.

And you will lose. All the time.

Stick with it because it’s way better than I’m making it sound.

This game is hardcore, is my point. But the cost of losing is low — you just start over like nothing happened — and it’ll have you “just one more”-ing like a crazy person. Doing it right earns you more time on the clock, and doing really well unlocks new tracks. I haven’t done much unlocking yet, but I’m so close.

Seriously, it’ll happen this next time. Or the one after that. I can feel it.

I gotta go.

LumenaGame Name: : Lumena
The Good: Low cost of failure, quick to play, and great music.
The Bad: A little obtuse starting out.
The Verdict: It’s an addictive, quick, frustrating, catchy, hypnotic, evil rhythm game. So it’s pretty good, if you’re into that sort of thing.
