The Contact Sheet, A Pocketable ‘Picnic’ Blanket For Photographers

I don’t know what I like most about MindShift’s new Contact Sheet: its name or its purpose. The Contact Sheet (named after a sheet of photographic paper showing all the photos from a roll of film, printed by putting the film right on top of the paper and flashing it with light) is a kind of fancy lightweight tarp for photographers.

The five-ounce (142-gram) sheet is made from ripstop nylon and spreads out to five feet by three and a half feet (1.5 x 1.1 meters), squashing down to a pocket-sized wad and slipping into a mesh stuff sack. The idea is that you keep it on hand and – when you’re on location – you can quickly set up a clean, dry spot for your gear.

It also works as a kind of picnic blanket for geeks. Spring for this $40 sheet and spread it out next time you leave the dark basement and head to the park. It won’t help you deal with the annoying bugs (the insect kind, not the software kind), but you’ll be able to rest a lot easier knowing your iPad, iPhone and Kindle are not resting directly on filthy grass or – worse – your companion’s disgusting, food-stained picnic rug.

The Contact Sheet even has corner cord loops so you can secure it, or even use it as a rain cover for your gear.

Or you could just pick up a sheet of Tyvek from the local UPS – your call.
