The Retina MacBook Pro Gets Some Sick (And Expensive) New Build-To-Order Upgrades [Updated]

Want a Retina MacBook Pro? Want to spend gobs more money on it? Apple has just expanded the build-to-order options for their most powerful notebook, allowing you to jack up the CPU to up to a 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor, or even upgrade the SSD to up to 768GB of flash. Now the most expensive Retina MacBook Pro you can buy is a whopping $3,749.00!

Update: We originally misunderstood the nature of these new build-to-order options. It is only the 2.3GHz Retina MacBook Pro that has recently gotten the option to upgrade to up to 768GB of flash storage; previously, Retina Display MacBook Pros with a faster processor were the only ones capable of being upgraded in this manner. We’re sorry about the confusion. Either way, it now looks like Apple has pulled these build-to-order options from their online store.

Scary thing is, I thought about it for a minute or two.

These “upgrades” have been available since the day they MBP-R hit the Apple store!

These “upgrades” have been available since the day they MBP-R hit the Apple store!

Wrong – processor and SSD options were only available as upgrades to the higher-end 2.7Ghz model. If you got the 2.3Ghz model, your only upgrade option was for 16 GB of RAM instead of 8 GB of RAM.

Now the 2.3Ghz model has the same processor and SSD upgrade options. I’m not sure why this article says these BTO options have been pulled. I’m seeing them now. Although the Store’s pages appear to be in a bit of flux…

“Pulled”? I’m looking at the Apple store page right now with the updates available. Also, the title and the text of the article are misleading since it doesn’t specify WHICH MacBook Pro Retina Display is getting the new update options as they already were available for “their most powerful notebook” (2.6GHz) since day one. The “Update” paragraph is very badly written also” “It is only the 2.3GHz Retina MacBook Pro that has recently gotten the option to upgrade…” Well? Is there another one besides the two original ones? Since the most powerful one had already the options, why say “It is only…”? It should simply say “the 2.3GHz Retina Display has now also the option that the 2.6GHz had…” or something like that. Very confusing, the whole article. The headline makes one believe that there are even newer upgrade options for the 2.6MHz.
