hey everyone today I'm going to show you
0:06
how you can monitor your Mac status
0:08
right from your dock now I've gotten a
0:09
lot of questions about the items that
0:12
are running in my menu bar and this
0:14
application up here is IAT menu and it
0:17
gives me some quick information about
0:19
status of different things on my Mac in
0:22
this case I have my network bandwidth as
0:24
well as my memory now this is nice and
0:26
all and I use it all the time but the
0:28
fact is that it cost $16 for this
0:31
application which may be out of some
0:33
people's price range for something that
0:35
they're only going to use once in a
0:36
while or that it's not really a critical
0:39
thing but with activity monitor which is
0:42
a application that's built right into
0:44
Mac OS 10 every Mac has it you can
0:47
achieve a similar effect and monitor
0:50
your max status right from your doc so
0:52
it's open up activity monitor you're
0:54
going to open a new finder window you're
0:56
going to go into your applications
0:58
folder and from there you're going to
1:00
scroll down until you find utilities
1:03
folder and in there you'll see activity
1:06
monitor uh most likely it'll be the
1:08
first application and you can open that
1:11
up now from here you have a lot of
1:13
different things you can see uh here's
1:15
all my processors running CPU system
1:17
memory disk activity dis usage Network
1:21
all kinds of things uh but the fact is
1:24
that this is kind of clunky and to look
1:26
at this all the time it's not quick and
1:28
it's not easily accessible able or handy
1:30
at all but you can view these things
1:34
right from the activity monitor icon
1:37
instead of being this boring little icon
1:40
down here that really provides no useful
1:41
information you can turn this into a
1:44
live updating icon uh by right clicking
1:47
or control clicking on it you're going
1:49
to pop up this little menu and the first
1:52
thing you're going to want to do is go
1:53
under the options menu and click keeping
1:56
dock so that this application will stay
1:58
here at all times the next thing you're
2:00
going to want to do is go under doc icon
2:03
and from here you have a lot of
2:03
different options of what you can
2:05
transform the doc icon into by default
2:09
it's set as show application icon uh but
2:12
let's say we want to show the CPU usage
2:15
now it turns into a CPU meter now you
2:18
can see the usage of my
2:19
CPU so that's kind of neat and it looks
2:22
pretty nice too and now you have a
2:23
simple CPU usage meter right in your doc
2:27
uh you can also change this to something
2:28
like CPU history and now you'll see the
2:31
history of the activity of it if you
2:34
prefer
2:35
that uh you can also do Show Network
2:38
usage and from here you can see what the
2:41
usage of the network is you can't see
2:44
how many kilobytes or megabytes you're
2:46
going through but it gives you a rough
2:47
estimate of what you're doing uh but you
2:49
also have a disk activity this one's
2:52
probably a little more accurate and I
2:55
also have memory usage so here I can see
2:57
that I'm using quite a bit of memory
3:00
and this one's exactly like the graph
3:02
that you see an activity monitor here
3:05
you don't get the breakdown of
3:06
everything uh but if you know these
3:07
colors here and you know that free is
3:10
blue and you can set the colors uh to
3:12
whatever you want you can customize this
3:15
and you can realize oh this uh orange
3:18
chunk here is what I'm using at the
3:19
current time and the blue chunk is
3:21
what's free and that's kind of the most
3:23
important parts right so then I can show
3:25
this back to application icon keep it
3:28
like that if I want but you're going to
3:29
get a lot more usage out of having the
3:32
do icon so I'm going to leave it as
3:33
memory and now you're going to start to
3:35
replicate that function of IAT menus or
3:38
there's other applications just like
3:39
that out there and you can also go up to
3:42
the monitors Tab and from here you can
3:44
show CPU usage and what it'll do is
3:47
it'll bring down this little uh box here
3:50
that shows pretty much the exact same
3:52
thing you saw in the dock but as a
3:54
little floating window so now if you
3:56
want to keep this you know maybe up in
3:58
the corner uh for just quick reference
4:00
you can do that or what you can do is
4:04
you can go floating CPU window and let's
4:07
say I want it
4:08
horizontal now it'll show up right here
4:10
and it's just little floating there's no
4:12
bar it's very unintrusive and it just
4:14
shows you the CPU usage and let's say I
4:17
want to shrink the doc back down and
4:19
just stick it in the corner or I can
4:21
kind of monitor it at all times and
4:23
works very well and now you can see I
4:25
have my memory usage showing in the doc
4:28
application icon as well as the CPU
4:30
usage and I can change this as well I
4:33
can show the CPU history and this brings
4:36
up another window not the most elant uh
4:38
solution but it still works and I can
4:42
also clear the CPU history
4:44
oops just like that so there you go so
4:48
this is a very low resource consuming
4:51
way to monitor your max status it's not
4:54
like it's going to be taking up hundreds
4:55
of megabytes of Ram or anything to just
4:57
monitor what you're doing and it's very
4:59
simple and handy and you can see right
5:01
here I have memory usage as well as CPU
5:04
usage all for free right in the
5:06
application now the downfall is when you
5:09
quit activity monitor you're not going
5:11
to see that anymore and uh that's kind
5:14
of a bummer it'd be nice if the
5:15
application icon was able to still
5:18
update even when the application was
5:20
closed uh but unfortunately that's not
5:22
there what you can do is you can close
5:24
the window it'll still remain open and
5:26
you can still see the status of both of
5:30
those things so it's pretty neat and
5:32
especially the doc icon it really
5:34
integrates into the system very well it
5:36
kind of looks like it's supposed to be
5:38
there so that's about all that's the
5:39
easy way to monitor your Mac status
5:41
right from your dock I hope you found
5:43
this video useful and thank you for
5:45
watching
