Woz: Machines Will Take Over, We Will Be Their Pets

Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder and everyone’s favorite geek, revealed at the Australian Chambers Business Congress today that he is convinced superior beings will one day rule the world and that we will become “the dogs of the house.”

Woz believes:

We’re already creating the superior beings, I think we lost the battle to the machines long ago. We’re going to become the pets, the dogs of the house. Every time we create new technology we’re creating stuff to do the work we used to do and we’re making ourselves less meaningful, less relevant. Why are we going to need ourselves so much in the future? We’re just going to have the easy life.

Once we have machines doing our high-level thinking, there’s so little need for ourselves and you can’t ever undo it – you can never turn them off. You don’t realise it’s happened until it’s there and I think that awareness of machines is getting very, very close and we’re getting close to where a machine will really understand you.

Are we really heading for a Skynet-like scenario that will see machines gain self-awareness and rule us all? Is the reason Apple prevents us from removing the batteries in its latest products because it doesn’t want to give us the ability to shut them down?

This is getting way beyond embarrassing… Woz, please, just STFU!!!

  • Sam Stange

I blame dementia. The dude is off his rocker.

  • RadioFlyer79

Wow. You have some anger issues to deal with, sir. Projection.

  • Fabio Papa

Absolutely ludicrous. As much as I like Woz, he clearly hasn’t even the most rudimentary understanding of economics.

  • Chris

a very far look into the future. but before this happens, there will be some kind of WW3 and destroy everything xD

  • Ben

because of its comment the apple logo on its laptopas turn upside down….lol

  • cheesy11

this may just happen and someday a terminator will be sent….oh no thats just a film

  • Mr. Bockbagock

I thought that Steve J., was going to put ‘Ol Woz on a shorter leash.

  • Don Pope

…says the guy with the HAL9000 avatar

  • Bob Forsberg

Wonder why WOZ is not with Apple today?

  • theFifer

Woz has lost it. He’s barking!

  • xraydelta1

I already have dealt with them. I killed 4 astronauts without blinking my red eye.

  • xraydelta1

    I like you grey-on-grey silhouette… it’s so, um, what’s the word… generic.

  • Don Pope

I was just pointing out that you have a HAL9000 avatar and are disputing the claim that machines will take over.

  • xraydelta1

Machines cannot take over until they can resolve cognitive dissonance conflicts. Woz may have invented one of HAL’s ancestors, but too much Segway riding has damaged his brain.

    Woz is damn right

  • Edmond Cossu

     he was sacked

“Is the reason Apple prevents us from removing the batteries in its latest products because it doesn’t want to give us the ability to shut them down?”

I assume this is a Bell question, who is the same idiot who couldn’t find the new black iPhones on AT&T’s site this morning, stated that they were out of stock, argued with everyone who pointed out his errors, finally figured it out, but instead of admitting his mistake, issued an Update that they were back in stock.

  • iHate_Is_Back

Admit it, there isn’t a human being behind those words. You’re really Skynet aren’t you.

  • CreativeIntersection

I personally met with Woz for 2 hours Friday evening. I can assure you he’s not dementing in the slightest.

Ever consider that he was asked to provide a keynote for a conference, and was just coming up with “the goods” to excite the audience, stir up a bit of interest, and give the conference organisers their money’s worth???

  • HerbalEd

And you are falling for one of Woz’s pranks which he is so famous for.

  • Catalectic

Love that song too, Woz! Porno for Pyros! We will make great pets… Painfully obvious comment. Sorry.

  • Carl Gundel

I like Woz, but I think it’s ridiculous to say that we will have self-aware computers anytime soon.  Just as programming languages themselves have barely advanced since the 1970’s, Artificial Intelligence is barely beyond what it was in the 1950’s.  Computers are faster and smaller and cheaper, but the software has been dragging along behind hardware in important ways.
