Not just you: macOS has a Location Services bug

macOS Ventura 13.5 users report a problem with Location Services. The bug apparently prevents users from giving or denying applications permission to gather and use information based on the current location of the Mac.

Reports of the bug date back weeks but Apple has yet to issue a fix.

No setting Location Services for you, macOS Ventura users

The Location Services affected by the bug are part of Apple’s privacy controls. Mac users are supposed to be able to prevent applications — both Apple’s own and third-party ones — from knowing where the computer is. Conversely, users need to be able to turn the feature on for some apps.

Apparently, neither is possible for users of macOS Ventura 13.5. This version was released in late July… to fix bugs, ironically. There are numerous reports on Apple Support Forums complaining of the problem in Settings.

To see for yourself, go to Apple menu  > System Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services. There should be a list of applications here, and users can toggle permission on or off. But user reports indicate that the list isn’t there.

At this point, there’s no workaround. The feature simply seems to be broken. Rebooting the computer won’t help.

What’s the big deal?

This sort of bug crops up occasionally. Ordinarily, Apple would put out a small macOS update in a week or so that fixes the problem and everyone would forget it ever happened.

But macOS Ventura 13.5 came out almost three work weeks ago and there’s no sign of a fix. Some people are starting to wonder how long Apple will let the bug stick around. The unusually long delay is becoming the source of conversations about whether there’s a risk to installing routine macOS updates.
