Pokémon GO lets you catch ’em all in real life

If, like me, you sank countless hours into Pokémon games during your misspent youth, there’s some great news: Pokémon GO, an augmented reality game for smartphones, is one step closer to rolling out.

And it looks great!

The first big original mobile Pokémon game, GO sends players on a scavenger hunt in which they must track down Pikachu, Charizard, Blastoise and the like by following a real-world map.

Over the weekend, the game’s creators started “field-testing” the app for smartphone owners in Japan, ahead of introducing it elsewhere in the world. Currently it’s available only for Android owners, although an iOS version should follow in the near future.

Personally, I’m fascinated by the concept, which could legitimately be one of the most innovative smartphone games of 2016 if executed correctly. I’ve played a few similar augmented reality games, alongside various mobile device treasure hunts, before — and I’m definitely going to be downloading this the moment it’s made available.
