Cool Web Stuff: If This Then That Is Like Automator For The Web

Have you checked out If This, Then That yet?

It’s a very cool new web service designed to make connections between all sorts of online services, and automate the way they work together. It’s a bit like Automator on your Mac, but for the web.

IFTTT comes with lots of useful tools built-in, and loads of users have already created their own workflows (known as recipes) which you can activate with just a few clicks.

There are lots of tools that work beautifully on your Mac or your iPad, or with a handful of iApps.

For example: if you use Instagram, you can set up an IFTTT recipe that automatically backs up your Insta photos to a Dropbox account. And while you’re at it, another recipe will auto-post your Instagrams to your Tumblr. Or to Facebook. All you have to do is snap the photos.

Another example: you’re browsing RSS feeds in Google Reader on your iPad or iPhone, and you want an easy way of blogging them, or sending them to your email inbox for chasing up later. IFTTT has recipes that will do those tasks too.

Setting up new recipes takes a little time, because in each case you have to grant IFTTT’s little software robots access to your services elsewhere. So if you want IFTTT to tweet stuff for you, you have to sign in to Twitter from IFTTT and grant it permission. But once the setting up is done, you can forget about it.

IFTTT is very flexible and offers a lot of scope for the future. I can’t wait to see what other iOS apps might soon appear in IFTTT’s list of available tools.
