This is ace. This is today’s Best Thing Ever. It’s called Revinyl, and it’s a one-dollar app that turns your music collection into a quiz that you can play on your own or with friends.

In “Rediscover” mode, the app will play you short snippets from songs, and show you a selection of album art. Pick the correct album – then name the song or the artist for bonus points. All against the clock, of course.

Much more fun, though, is “Party Mode”, where you enter the names up of to four players. Again, the app plays a song snippet – but now, each player has a “buzzer” on the iPhone or iPad screen that they can tap to give an answer. It’s first tap first, so fingers on buzzers, as they say on the TV.

As you play, you have the chance to add songs to a Revinyl playlist which you can then listen to from inside the app.

Revinyl’s developer Christian Faber says this is just the start. Right now the app only works with what’s on your device, but he’d like to open it up to other players (and therefore other people’s music collections) via wifi/bluetooth connections. Imagine going to a bar with some friends and challenging the people at the next table to a quiz. Great idea. He’s also investigating the possibility of opening up the app to the millions of song samples on the iTunes Store – and give people the chance to buy music as they play.

The role of sleeve art in this app is important – it’s used to help people associate artwork with music, something that used to be automatic back in the days of vinyl, but doesn’t happen so much now that everything’s digital. That’s why the app is called Revinyl.

This app is great fun and great value. I look forward to seeing it grow.
