For the first time since the disappointing Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the world’s most ultra-violent fighting franchise is making its way onto iOS, courtesy of Mortal Kombat X Mobile: a stripped down, swipe-based version of the console Mortal Kombat X, which fuses together card battler and bone-crushing action.
Similar to the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the game lets you forge a trio of fighters who tag team to take on a series of increasingly tough opponents. Tap for quick attacks, swipe for harder ones, and hold down two fingers to block.
It may not have the depth of its video game big brother, and its free-to-play concept means some of the best stuff is hidden behind a paywall, but if you’re looking to pull off a “fatality” or two on the commute to work without finding yourself in jail, it’s definitely worth checking out.

One other neat feature of Mortal Kombat X Mobile is that it allows you to unlock new skins, such as Johnny Cage’s “Ninja Mime” costume, and other rewards which can then be transferred to the console game. This interconnectivity will go live on April 14 when Mortal Kombat X proper is released.
Until then, you can get your fill of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kano and Raiden (plus new characters like Cassie Cage, D’Vorah and Kotal Kahn) with this undisputedly attractive mobile game. Well, as attractive as a game in which you pull out other people’s spines can be, of course.
