0:04
hey everyone today I'm going to show you
0:06
how you can use pages on the Mac with
0:08
the iOS version using iCloud now just a
0:11
couple things before I get into this
0:13
it's no way a full solution and it's not
0:16
very seamless at all so it's not
0:18
something that you can really count on
0:20
for everyday use if you're going to use
0:22
Pages like this all the time uh but it
0:25
is a little bit of a workaround so it is
0:28
what it is so basically
0:30
the way iCloud works is it actually
0:33
stores files on your computer for iCloud
0:37
so if I just make a new document here
0:39
and let's drag a couple Graphics in so
0:41
let's put the cult Mac logo in here and
0:43
let's go down here and let's type test
0:46
this is a test and uh you know we can do
0:50
some formatting so let's make this a
0:53
littleit bigger bold something like that
0:55
now we have a
0:57
document now normally to get this
1:00
document on your iOS device uh to use
1:03
the iOS version of pages whether it be
1:05
on the iPhone or iPad you'd have to
1:07
either email it to yourself upload it to
1:10
iwork.com using something like the share
1:14
tool in here or you could possibly bring
1:16
your device into iTunes and sync the
1:18
file through iTunes that way but because
1:22
the iCloud documents are actually stored
1:24
on your Mac in a certain folder you can
1:26
actually save your document to the
1:28
folder and it'll upload right to iCloud
1:31
so basically when I go up to file and
1:34
save instead of just saving out of my
1:35
desktop or my documents folder or
1:37
whatever I'm going to actually click my
1:40
home directory and inside my home
1:43
directory I'm going to go to the library
1:44
folder and in here you're going to see a
1:46
mobile documents folder right here now
1:49
these are all the apps that store data
1:52
in iCloud so we're going to use Pages
1:55
cuz it is Pages now in the documents
1:57
folder is where all the documents that
1:59
are stored on the iOS version of pages
2:01
are stored so if we save this and we'll
2:04
call this uh demo and if we save this
2:08
document right inside this folder if you
2:11
look on the iOS device you can see that
2:15
in just a couple seconds the document's
2:17
actually going to pop up because it is
2:20
saved here and you can see it says demo
2:22
and it's going to update the document
2:24
and what I can do is I can open the
2:27
document right on here and you you'll
2:30
see the same document we just saved so
2:32
this is really handy if you want to
2:34
start working on a document on your Mac
2:36
and you want to quickly save it to
2:38
iCloud so that you can work on it on the
2:40
go and just pick up your iPad run out
2:42
the door whatever and be able to still
2:44
work on your document and it's much
2:46
faster than using an emailing to
2:47
yourself method or you know uploading to
2:50
iwork.com it's just a lot easier so
2:53
you'd probably think that if you went
2:54
back to edit this on your Mac later
2:56
let's say you got back that you could
2:58
just go back into Library and down to
3:00
mobile documents and over to pages and
3:03
documents and you could just open up the
3:05
do Pages file that you saved before
3:07
right well you can't actually uh because
3:10
once you open the file on your iOS
3:14
device it turns it into demo. Pages
3:18
DTF so basically it uses a slightly
3:21
different file layout on the iOS version
3:25
so it doesn't save it as just pages and
3:28
this is where it becomes a little more
3:30
tricky because now no longer once you've
3:33
opened it on your device can you go back
3:36
and just use it like you would on your
3:38
Mac so really this is kind of a one-way
3:40
solution as I discussed earlier and it's
3:43
not very seamless but now this file
3:46
isn't gone forever of course you could
3:48
export the document on your device and
3:50
mail it back to yourself or use the
3:52
iTunes method or whatever you
3:55
choose so it's really only a one-way
3:57
thing it's easy to upload your new
3:59
documents from Mac
4:01
iCloud using pages but it's not easy to
4:04
do it in reverse now if you're really
4:06
adamant about sticking to doing it all
4:09
through the Mac instead of having to
4:11
worry about emailing which would in this
4:13
case be a little bit easier I found a
4:15
way that you can actually turn these
4:16
Pages DTF files back into openable
4:20
documents on your Mac so basically
4:22
you're going to have to save another
4:23
copy of the document to your
4:25
Mac and I'll save this to my desktop
4:30
and now you can see I the document on my
4:31
desktop so this is called demo. pages
4:34
right now if I call it demo. zip I can
4:37
use zip and now this is turned into a
4:40
zip document and if I open this up
4:43
here's the contents of the document so
4:47
if I go into the pages D TEF document
4:51
here which is actually a folder and I
4:53
bring over the
4:55
index.xml file and I put it in there and
4:57
I put in all the graphics I need into
5:00
there as well I can go back over here
5:04
and rename this demo. Pages TEF file and
5:08
I can take off the demo. pages use.
5:12
pages and I can actually open this back
5:15
up on the Mac now there's always going
5:17
to be conflict sometimes the formatting
5:19
is not going to be good uh but you know
5:22
that's it is how it is now of course
5:25
after going through all that trouble it
5:26
would probably be easier just to export
5:28
the document on your device device mail
5:30
it to yourself or something like that
5:32
but the main focus of this is that you
5:34
can easily very easily save files from
5:38
ior to iCloud and it's not a
5:41
functionality that's built in so it's
5:42
actually really handy so there you go
5:45
that's how to use pages on the Mac with
5:47
iCloud of course if you have anything
5:49
that you'd like to see me do a how to on
5:50
make sure to send me an email I hope you
5:52
found this video useful and thank you
5:54
