What's going on everybody? Ian here for Cult of Mac. The last couple weeks have been absolutely packed
0:17
with rumors and leaks about what we might expect to see in both iOS 13 and Mac OS 10.15 this summer
0:25
It's enough to get you really, really hyped. So here's all the different features
0:29
rumored so far coming in Apple's upcoming operating systems. Starting with iOS 13
0:35
there's a ton of features we expect to see that make big and small changes to the OS
0:39
One of those is dark mode. The idea with dark mode on iOS
0:43
is that it makes your device easier to use in a dark room or for low light situations
0:49
Instead of being blinded by a super white interface, you get a nice dark interface on OLED phones
0:55
like the iPhone 10 and 10S and 10S Max. You get those super deep blacks
0:59
and it would make everything just a little more comfortable. You know, a couple of weeks ago, we had a tips and tricks video
1:04
on how to get the most out of accessibility features. And a couple of those tricks were
1:08
to make iOS more usable in a low light situation. Having a native dark mode would be a great way
1:13
to make iOS and an iPhone or an iPad much more comfortable to use in darker situations
1:19
without any super complex accessibility settings or anything fussy. Another small improvement to iOS 13
1:26
is the possibility of support for loading custom fonts, which would mean that you could add in fonts to the system
1:33
to use inside of apps for design or writing and have your own personal flair
1:37
your own personal style within those apps. Another small but notable rumored change in iOS 13
1:43
is an upgraded volume display. Instead of that weird pop-up box that you get on your iOS device
1:48
the rumor is that there's a redesigned volume dialogue that would be somewhere up at the top
1:52
a little more discreet, a little less intrusive to the interface overall
1:56
to make it easier to see that the volume's changing without it blocking all of the content
2:01
behind the main part of your screen. There's also rumors of a new files app coming to iOS
2:06
We're not entirely sure what a new files app means, but the hope is that it would let you plug in
2:11
a portable hard drive or SD cards or some other external media
2:16
and import files directly into your cloud storage for access within apps
2:20
Having that ability to use external media with your cloud services, with your iOS device
2:26
would be a huge change. Another app rumored to be getting a redesign is the Reminders app
2:30
Reminders hasn't seen any meaningful changes since it was launched on iOS 7, so it's definitely due for an upgrade
2:36
both visually and functionally. Having something that's a little more modern in design
2:40
instead of the stacked index card look and something a little more functional
2:43
than basic yes or no, this is done or not done, would be extremely helpful
2:48
Having things like subtasks or being able to append notes or different types of reminders or timings to events
2:55
could be a huge change to the Reminders app and make it far more functional and far more useful to a ton of people
3:02
Mail is also expected to get an update in iOS 13 with features coming from the Mac like smart mailboxes
3:10
and the ability to auto-group or auto-flag certain types of emails as different kinds of things
3:15
much like Gmail has its ability to use its smart boxes for promotional emails or travel things
3:22
or personal things or important things. Having something similar to that in the iOS app
3:27
would be a huge change to Mail on iPhone and iPad. There's also the rumor
3:32
that iOS will be gaining the Snooze functionality, which most third-party email apps
3:37
have had for quite a while now, and it's something that Apple's own app
3:41
has been lagging behind in. It's something that people really, really do use quite frequently with their email app
3:46
So having that update come to Mail on iOS would be a huge, huge improvement
3:50
to one of Apple's most popular applications. There are also rumors that Safari's going to get some improvements in iOS 13
3:56
with the most notable change being the ability for Safari to automatically detect when a website should be loaded
4:02
in the desktop mode on an iPad. There are a ton of websites out there that just don't play nice on an iPad
4:08
or their mobile version doesn't really support iPad the way it should
4:12
and sometimes the desktop website experience is just better suited for a tablet
4:16
especially a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which is a huge screen, much more suited for a desktop experience
4:23
than an iPhone-type experience. Having the ability to tell Safari this page should always load in a desktop mode
4:30
would make it far more useful to use your iPad as a computer replacement with full desktop-type browsing experience
4:36
There's also rumor that two iOS apps are going to become one in iOS 13
4:41
and that's Find My iPhones and Find My Friends. Having all of that combined into a single app
4:46
makes tons of sense because then it's find my whatever it is that I'm looking for
4:50
and having a single app that you can go to and find your phone or your friend
4:55
and figure out where people are in relation to you or your devices
4:59
There's also rumor that Apple is launching a tile-like tracker device. The idea of the tracker is that you can attach it
5:05
to something that you want to know the location of, whether it's a backpack or luggage
5:09
or your camera or personal gear, things like that that you could track within the app
5:14
and that it would use the proximity of the tracker to all iPhones around it through Bluetooth LE
5:19
to find a fairly precise location. And it could be far more useful than what's currently on the market
5:24
since you'd be relying on other iOS devices anywhere in the area to get that location
5:30
just by using the operating system's native support for this Find My Things feature
5:36
iOS 13's also expected to be a big year for the iPad with tons of improvements to multitasking
5:41
and new gestures coming to the OS that are supposed to make the iPad and iPhone
5:47
more usable, more functional, and more powerful. With the iPad, there are several rumors
5:51
that suggest that Apple is going to change how multitasking works in the OS
5:56
allowing you to put the same app side by side by side with itself
6:00
making it possible to do something like read an email and respond to a different email at the same time
6:04
or possibly even composing multiple emails at the same time or work on two different documents
6:09
within the same application. Currently, Safari on the iPad already does this
6:13
where you can have two different Safari windows side by side. It looks like Apple may be extending that same functionality
6:18
to other apps within iOS. This could also change how multitasking works
6:22
in app pairings on iOS, allowing you to have, say, one note paired with an email
6:28
and a different note paired with Safari instead of having to bounce back and forth between different notes in your different pairings
6:34
Another rumored change possibly coming to iOS 13 and specifically to the iPad
6:38
is support for a mouse or other pointing devices like a mouse or a trackpad
6:43
The iPad could be an incredibly powerful iOS-powered computer when they're docked at a station
6:49
Another rumored feature of iOS 13 is the ability for developers to take advantage of a bunch of new Siri intents
6:55
They can be for things like travel times, airport information, flight status
7:00
or even additional third-party media controls, which could mean that you could use your AirPods
7:06
or Siri on your iOS device to do things like trigger playing back music in Spotify
7:11
instead of Apple Music. It could be a huge change to the way that Siri works on iOS
7:16
While we're on the topic of Siri, let's switch gears and talk about macOS 10.15
7:20
Rumor has it that Siri Shortcuts and the Shortcuts app are both gonna make their way to macOS this year
7:26
bringing a new era of automation to macOS and what users can do with the Mac
7:33
allowing you to do some very serious automation in a more user-friendly interface
7:39
that we've grown to know through iOS. Screen time is also expected to make an appearance
7:43
in the new version of macOS, allowing users to get an even bigger, more broad picture
7:48
of what their digital well-being is like. With the Screen Time app on iOS
7:52
you get a really good idea of what apps are taking up your time. Having that same power within macOS would be huge
7:58
for better understanding how you're using your device, which would give you a much more full picture
8:03
of just how much time you're spending in front of what devices and what it is you're doing on those devices
8:08
There's also rumors that on macOS, because of the addition of these Marzipan-type applications
8:13
which are the iOS applications that can run on the Mac, we'll get some new windowing and multitasking features
8:20
that will make using those apps even more powerful. Things like being able to put two apps side-by-side
8:26
like you can already do on a Mac, as well as giving you the option to use these in multiple windows
8:30
much like you'd be able to do on iOS, having multiple instances of the same app
8:35
looking at different documents or different parts of the app. The same thing could be true on macOS
8:40
with these Marzipan applications, making them much more like a true desktop class application
8:45
Another Mac app rumored to be getting changes this year is iTunes
8:49
With macOS 10.15, it's expected that Apple will finally break up iTunes
8:53
into a bunch of standalone media apps, all coming from their iOS counterparts
8:57
So we'll have a music app, a TV app for movies and TV shows
9:01
a books app for your books, a standalone podcast app, and even possibly some type of device syncing
9:07
or device management application, although it's also very possible that iTunes becomes a utilities type app
9:14
and gets buried into the utilities folder, making it less bloated, more comfortable
9:18
and more familiar to those who are coming from the iOS versions of the apps
9:22
Another change coming to macOS is a feature code named Sidecar, which according to rumors is a way to send an application
9:28
from your primary display to a secondary display, which could include the iPad
9:33
This would allow you to take an application on your desktop and send it to your iPad
9:37
use your iPad as a secondary display for your Mac, allow you to interact either with your hand
9:42
or with your Apple Pencil with that application, and then when you're done
9:46
simply bring it back over to your Mac's desktop and continue working on it as you needed
9:52
One final change rumored to be coming to macOS 10.15 is how it integrates with the Apple Watch
9:57
Currently, the Apple Watch can be used to unlock your Mac and in certain situations be used
10:01
to approve Apple Pay transactions through Safari on the Mac. The latest rumors suggest that the Apple Watch
10:07
could also be used in place of Touch ID on Macs that don't support Apple's biometric authentication
10:13
This means you could use your Apple Watch for things like installation password prompts
10:18
or signing into websites in your browsers. It also would work for signing into things
10:23
like a password manager. For us, that's Dashlane. Dashlane simplifies and secures
10:28
