The Retina iPad Mini Has An iSight Shootout With The iPad Air & iPhone 5s

Just looking at it, it’s clear that the iPad mini with Retina Display has improved upon its predecessor down to the pixel. But what about the pixels you can’t see? The ones inside the built-in iSight camera?

The bad news is the iSight Camera hasn’t changed from last year from a hardware perspective. It’s still a 5 megapixel, backside-illuminated, five-element, hybrid IR file red camera with a f/2.4 aperture. But the good news is it does a little better with low-light performance anyway.

Over at iMore, Rene Richie put the new iPad mini with Retina Display through its paces against the iPad Air, original iPad mini, and iPhone 5s.

Basically, what he found out was that while the camera is the same in the Retina iPad mini, the A7 SoC is able to get better images from it, especially in regards to macros and low-light performance. It’s not going to blow you away, but it is a small improvement.

A bigger improvement is the new Facetime HD camera in the Retina iPad mini. It’s only a slight improvement — essentially, the megapixels have gotten slightly bigger and gotten a back-illuminated sensor for better low-light performance — but an improvement none the less.

People who take pictures with their iPads are often mocked, but even so, these small improvements are welcome. Check out iMore’s full write-up for the full comparisons.
