Try misspelling “abortion” in iOS. Does Apple help you spellcheck it like most of your mistakes? Nope.
It turns out that there’s a huge collection of controversial lingo and not-so-controversial-lingo that Apple takes a hands-off approach to with spellcheck. The Daily Beast heavily researched spellcheck in iOS and how it ignored certain words like “rape” and “murder.” Offering a correct spelling of “suicide” is something Apple isn’t comfortable with. “Our analysis found over 14,000 words that are recognized as words when spelled accurately, but that won’t be corrected even when they are only slightly misspelled,” reports The Daily Beast.
The findings are a little surprising, but it doesn’t come as a total shock that Apple is playing it safe with something as nuanced as spellcheck. After all, this is the same company that heavily policies the App Store and obsessives over the tiniest of details.
