Anonymous Tweet iPhone App Popular with Wall Street Protesters

Protesters who want to get the word out but don’t want to let their bosses, wives or parents know what they’re up to are using an iPhone app called Vibe that allows for anonymous tweets.

Dubbed the “anonymous anarchist version of Twitter,” the free app lets you share broadcast your message (through text, photo or video) choosing the geographic range you want it to reach (from 160 feet to miles away) and for how long you want to share it –  just 15 minutes or up to 30 days. (You can also broadcast from Vibe to all of your Twitter followers, though this seems like more of a potential pitfall than a feature – those not so dextrous of thumb could wind up in hot water.)

Blog Betabeat spotted an iPad connected to a projector broadcasting tweets near Wall Street over the weekend

Vibe is the brainchild of New York-based dev Hazem Sayed, who recently mentioned in the Vibe Twitter feed that an Android version of the app is in beta. He says the only information Vibe asks for from its users is location data, so the app can determine if users are close enough to read a message.

Forget being an “anonymous anarchist,” I’d use Vibe at public events (press conferences especially) to cut through the self-congratulatory B.S. that makes a lot of live-tweeted happenings seem like a Midwestern high school mixer where everyone plays nice to maintain popularity.

In fact, the developer originally intended it for work, school, sporting events and for fun. Amen.
