Late last year, I switched password managers. I traded in trusty old 1Password for relative newcomer Dashlane, and I haven’t looked back.
Dashlane is a well-designed, fully functional and easy-to-use password manager that tops 1Password in one key respect: a Security Dashboard that makes it dead easy to track your online security and update it as necessary.

Hi, I'm Leander Caney from CultOfMind.com and I'm here today to explain why I switched password managers from 1Password to Dashlane
0:14
So I've been using 1Password for years, but after switching over to a relative newcomer Dashlane, I haven't looked back
0:20
Dashlane is a full-featured, well-designed, easy-to-use password manager that tops 1Password in one key respect
0:26
It has a great security dashboard that makes it dead easy to track your online security and update it as necessary
0:32
If you're not using a password manager, you should start right now. You might think you don't need one, but a password manager is a must-have if you do anything online
0:40
With rampant online fraud and almost daily data breaches, a password manager dramatically increases your online security without much extra effort
0:47
All you have to do is change your habits just a little bit. They're easy and convenient to use. They make it easy to create and manage strong, secure passwords across devices and apps
0:57
For years, I've been using 1Password from a company called AgileBits. 1Password is the granddaddy of password managers for the Mac and iOS
1:05
It's got every feature under the sun and a great security architecture, but it never was really super easy to use
1:11
So last year, I decided to take a look at what else is out there
1:15
I settled on Dashlane, which has almost every feature in a password manager you'd want
1:20
It works across all your Apple devices and works great with iPhone X's Face ID
1:24
It has a bold and colorful interface. Everything is laid out clearly and logically
1:28
The first thing I did was export all my passwords from 1Password and import them into Dashlane
1:33
When that was done, I opened up the security dashboard, which very clearly displays your security score
1:38
which is a percentage score based on the strength of your passwords. It takes into account how strong they are, whether they are reused or not, and if they might have been compromised in a data breach
1:47
Right away, I could see at a glance that dozens of my passwords were weak, reused, or had possibly been compromised
1:52
Now this is the best thing, what I consider to be Dashlane's best feature
1:56
It prompts you to fix weak passwords with its password changer, which automatically updates weak passwords on compatible websites
2:03
With one click, the app logs into multiple websites, changing weak passwords and then remembering them for you
2:08
It works with several hundred websites, mostly big and mainstream ones. It didn't update every weak or compromised password I used, but it did change a bunch of them
2:16
It saved me a lot of time and effort. Dashlane says it's greatly expanding this feature, but wouldn't say when it will be available
2:22
My security score from about 60% to about 80%. If I took a few more dodgy passwords by hand, I expect my score to approach near 100%
2:30
Even at 80%, Dashlane says my over-security score is, quote, super safe
2:35
Now 1Password has a similar feature, which prompts you to change weak or duplicate or compromised passwords
2:41
but it's not as visible as Dashlane's. In fact, even though I knew of its existence, I never used it
2:47
and I never noticed any prompts in 1Password to take action. That's another thing I like about Dashlane
2:52
It brings lots of little animated alerts that prompt you to use it. Dashlane has a bunch of other features too
2:58
Too many to go into here, but I'll mention a few. Dashlane is cross-platform with support for macOS, iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS
3:06
It can be accessed via a website interface, the excellent desktop software, or an iOS app
3:11
The mobile app is colorful and easy to use, and there's an extension that allows me to fill passwords in mobile Safari and compatible apps
3:18
which are too few unfortunately, but Dashlane is at the mercy of third-party developers here
3:22
As well as passwords, Dashlane autofills web forms and remembers credit card numbers
3:27
It offers two-factor authentication, which 1Password does not. It has business accounts, secure password sharing, and one unique feature
3:35
which I hope not to use any time soon, which is the ability to give someone else emergency access to your passwords
3:40
If something goes wrong, like you die, your loved one can access your password vault
3:45
Dashlane is free for one device, but costs $39.99 if you want to sync passwords across devices
3:50
which you will more than likely want to do. All in all, Dashlane is a well-designed and easy-to-use service
3:55
that provides a lot of security and peace of mind without much hassle. It stands out for its design, which makes password management easy and intuitive
4:02
It's not that I didn't like 1Password, but Dashlane is better. And that's why we're partnering with Dashlane to make it the official password manager of Kult of Mac
4:11
For its ease of use, rock-solid security, and a security manager which makes it really easy to update weak and compromised passwords
4:18
we recommend it wholeheartedly. You can decide for yourself how good Dashlane is by downloading a free trial
4:24
Just head over to Dashlane.com. I think you'll like it
