hey everyone today I'm sure how you can
0:11
keep your files safe by using encrypted
0:14
disk images in Mac OS 10 line now you
0:16
might be saying that there's an easier
0:18
way to do this and that is with file
0:19
evolve and while filevault is built
0:22
right into OS 10 and it's easy way to
0:24
encrypt your files it's not ideal if you
0:27
only want to keep a few items safe and
0:30
locked away so that's what i'll be
0:32
showing you how to do in this video so
0:35
you're going to need disk utility for
0:36
this and the easiest way to go define
0:38
that is to open up a new Finder window
0:40
go to your hard drive and from there the
0:43
Applications folder and then utilities
0:46
and utilities you should find disk
0:48
utility and you can open that up now in
0:50
disk utility it's fairly simple all you
0:52
have to do is select new image and here
0:55
I can select a title for the image so
0:57
let's say I want to call this image
0:59
image now this is the title of the image
1:02
that you're going to see when the file
1:04
is on a desktop and under name this is
1:08
the name of the disk image actually has
1:10
when you see a mounted in finder so I'll
1:13
call this one a disk so you can see the
1:14
difference between over later and then
1:17
from here I can choose the size of the
1:18
disk image and there's a whole bunch of
1:21
different sizes or I can choose custom
1:22
and then here I can choose sectors
1:24
kilobytes megabytes gigabytes or
1:26
terabytes and of course if your drive
1:28
isn't several terabytes in size you're
1:30
not going to want to choose several
1:32
terabytes because it's not going to work
1:34
much for this demo I'm just going to
1:36
choose the default 100 megabytes the
1:39
important word of note is that once you
1:40
choose the size of the disk image you
1:42
cannot switch it back after you've
1:44
created it and you cannot put any files
1:46
in this image that exceed 100 megabytes
1:49
and once you've filled it up that's it
1:51
you can't keep adding more files unless
1:53
you delete some let me move to be format
1:55
section now there's a lot of different
1:57
formats here and any of the mac OS
2:00
formats will not work on a Windows
2:02
computer if you choose to use the image
2:05
on more than one computer well if you
2:07
want to know more about formats you can
2:09
check out another video I didn't call
2:10
the mac and of course i'll have a link
2:11
to that post below the video of c
2:13
you can watch that as well and then
2:16
here's where I can select encryption now
2:18
there's two different types of
2:18
encryption and the best one to choose is
2:21
128-bit aes encryption that is
2:24
recommended if you choose something like
2:26
256-bit it's incredibly secure but it's
2:29
much slower and really anything over 128
2:33
is that really necessary and then under
2:35
partitions the thing that I always
2:37
choose and the best thing in here is
2:38
single partition and that is the Master
2:41
Boot Record partition map so this is
2:43
what's standard and unless you want to
2:45
use your disk image for other purposes
2:47
this is what you want to choose and then
2:50
from here you can choose an image format
2:52
now the default is read and write this
2:54
image and that's what we're going to use
2:56
for this but if you choose something
2:57
like a sparse image that will actually
3:00
grow over time as you put files in it
3:02
which is nice because then you don't
3:04
have to worry about to be in this case
3:06
100 megabytes size limit but for now
3:09
we'll just leave it like it is and then
3:10
term here I can select create and it's
3:13
going to ask me for my password for this
3:15
demo I'm just going to use password as
3:16
the password which is not secure at all
3:19
but it's just the demo and you can see
3:21
the password train is very weak now I'm
3:24
going to uncheck remember password on my
3:25
keychain because if you leave this
3:27
checked anytime somebody on your
3:29
computer tries to open this kimmage
3:31
it'll let them right in because the
3:32
passwords in your keychain so I'm going
3:35
to uncheck that and select ok and it's
3:37
going to create the image rather fast in
3:39
this case because it's only a hundred
3:41
megabytes and I'm here on the desktop
3:43
you can see image that dmg and this is
3:47
your disk image so if I open up a new
3:48
Finder window you can see that it's
3:50
mounted right here and it's just called
3:53
disk and now I can drag whatever files I
3:56
would want to into it ml copyright it in
3:58
and then I can eject the disk and now
4:01
once the disc is injected if I try to
4:03
open it up right here you can see it's
4:05
going to tell me to enter the password
4:06
before the image so I'll just enter
4:08
password and now if I open up a new
4:11
Finder window it'll let me write in and
4:13
there I can see all my encrypted files
4:15
so there you go there's how to use
4:17
encrypted disk images in Mac OS 10 this
4:20
is a great way to keep some of your more
4:22
sensitive files safe if you have any how
4:25
to is that you'd like to see me do make
4:26
sure
4:27
send me an email I hope you found this
4:28
video useful thank you for watching
