hi I'm Steve Smith and welcome to
0:01
another Cult of Mac suay tips with apple
0:04
releasing a new iMac every year or so it
0:07
can get a little bit frustration when
0:08
you've just spent a small fortune on
0:10
your iMac only a year or two ago well
0:13
today I'm going to show you how to boost
0:15
the power and speed up your iMac which
0:17
only takes a few minutes and doesn't
0:18
really cost that much all just by
0:20
upgrading your RAM let's get
0:33
before we get into this we need to know
0:35
what your system can handle so we're
0:37
going to head over to crucial.com and
0:38
find the system scanner the link can be
0:41
found below once on there you can
0:42
download the scanner run it and then it
0:44
will tell you how much RAM your iMac can
0:46
take so here we go my iMac can take 32
0:50
gig and I purchased 8 gig of RAM so I'll
0:52
be upgrading my Mac from 4 gig to 12 so
0:55
this works for all iMacs from 2009 to
0:57
2011 the newer models have a slightly
1:00
different technique which we'll cover
1:01
soon in a video so first step is to turn
1:05
computer once it's shut down disconnect
1:07
all the cables and the power Corde from
1:12
computer place it on a soft clean towel
1:14
or another flat surface cuz we don't
1:16
want the computer screen to get
1:17
scratched then using the Philips
1:19
screwdriver remove the chin
1:21
plate has three screws as you can see
1:25
and don't worry about them falling out
1:26
they're cleverly attached then the next
1:28
thing you need to do is on tuck the tab
1:31
and as you can see it's already got two
1:32
sticks of ram in there which adds up to
1:34
my 4 Gig if you pull it out memory stick
1:36
will come with it this does take a
1:38
little bit more Force than you'd expect
1:39
so you really need to give it a good tug
1:41
all you need to do is insert your new
1:43
Ram into the empty slot and make sure
1:45
the shorter strip is on the right hand
1:47
side after you have inserted it press
1:50
the ramp into the slot again this does
1:52
take a little bit of force to put it in
1:54
but you should hear a slight click when
1:55
the memory is in place correctly then
1:57
tuck the tabs back in the way they were
1:59
and then put the chain plate back on and
2:01
screw it in plug it all back
2:11
on and if everything's gone successfully
2:13
you'll be able to see it's installed
2:20
RAM well that's it for another week let
2:23
me know what you've upgraded your iMac
2:25
