hey everyone today I'm going to show how
0:06
you can create keyboard shortcuts in OS
0:08
10 that work in the same way as they do
0:11
on iOS so you may be familiar with iOS 5
0:15
and the fact that it contains a keyboard
0:17
shortcut option and basically the idea
0:19
behind it is that you can type in a
0:21
phrase that you might type that's just a
0:22
couple letters long and then put a
0:26
sentence or several words in so that
0:29
when once you type the default set of
0:32
letters it will replace it with a phrase
0:35
of your choice so Apple includes an
0:36
example which is on my way which they
0:39
abbreviated with the shortcut OMW so you
0:42
can see how it works and many people
0:44
found this feature in iOS 5 is something
0:47
new uh but actually it's been around in
0:49
Macos 10 for quite a while now and it's
0:51
here in Lion as well and you can
0:53
actually do it but not a lot of people
0:54
know about it because it's kind of
0:56
hidden and off to the side out of the
0:57
way so if you've ever used something
0:58
like text expander this Works in a
1:00
similar way although it is a little bit
1:02
more limited so all you have to do to
1:05
set this up is open up system
1:07
preferences so you can launch this up
1:10
and now in system preferences you're
1:11
going to go into language and text and
1:14
in language and text you have all these
1:15
menus here's all the different languages
1:17
and everything but what you want to do
1:18
is just forget about the rest of that
1:20
and go over to the text Tab and over in
1:22
the text tab this is where you set this
1:25
all up so you can see a list on the side
1:28
here of different shortcuts and there's
1:29
one's automatically included with the OS
1:31
like some of these fractions and things
1:33
like that now if you're interested this
1:35
is also the area in Lon where you can
1:38
turn off uh automatic spelling
1:40
correction so if you don't like auto
1:41
correct you can get rid of that here too
1:43
and there's actually a lot of different
1:44
things within this language and text
1:47
panel that you can change and tweak to
1:49
your liking so you can see here that
1:50
I've already set up a demo shortcut and
1:52
this is like the one that Apple includes
1:54
an iOS where I changed on my way to this
1:58
shortcut all I have to do is type OMW
2:02
but let's say I want to add another one
2:03
and let's say I want this one to be for
2:06
my name so let's say I want to type in
2:10
Ms and then when I type that I wanted to
2:12
replace it with my name so I can do
2:16
something like that and hit enter and
2:18
there you go you have created a shortcut
2:20
and it's really that easy and this is
2:22
actually really handy there's a lot of
2:23
different uses for it that you might not
2:24
know of and one that I've really come to
2:27
love is the fact that you can enter a
2:29
shortcut
2:30
for an email address so for example
2:33
let's say I want to set up a shortcut
2:36
here so let's say when I type in Ms
2:38
email it will replace it with my email
2:44
address so it's really handy and if you
2:46
fill out forms a lot or if you're
2:47
logging in and you know you're using
2:49
emails things like that it's really
2:51
handy that you can just type in a
2:53
shortcut and you don't have to type out
2:54
an entire email address and I find that
2:56
it works really well for a lot of stuff
2:58
like that now another thing thing you
3:00
can do with this and it's new with line
3:02
because there wasn't the Emoji option
3:04
before line is you can set different
3:08
emoticons basically and you can assign
3:11
them to the emoji features in OS 10 so
3:14
let's say I want to do a smiley face now
3:18
if I go over to the input sources tab
3:20
here what I can do is I can select
3:23
keyboard and character viewer and now if
3:25
I go up to your menu bar you'll see that
3:26
it appears and I can select show
3:29
character viewer now this menu that pops
3:32
up here will have all the different
3:34
characters that you can insert so let's
3:36
say I want to go over to text and I want
3:39
a smiley face for this shortcut that I'm
3:42
creating I can go in here and I can drag
3:44
in a smiley
3:45
face and hit enter and there it's
3:48
created that shortcut for me so now
3:49
whenever I type a smiley face it'll
3:51
replace it with the emote account if you
3:53
want to test these out to make sure that
3:55
they're working correctly you can open
3:56
up text edit over here and you can try
3:59
them out so let's say I try on my way
4:02
just like the one that Apple has an iOS
4:04
now as soon as I hit
4:06
space bam it turns into on my way and I
4:09
can do the same thing for my name so Ms
4:11
turns into my name and Ms email turns
4:14
into my email address and then of course
4:17
the smiley face that I set up turns into
4:20
the emoticon smiley face so there you go
4:22
and it's just like the way it works in
4:24
iOS it's a little bit more limited than
4:26
something like text expander but it is
4:28
very handy built right into the OS a lot
4:30
of people don't know about it so I
4:31
thought I'd share it with you today so
4:33
there you go that's how you can set up
4:34
iOS style keyboard shortcuts right
4:36
within Mac os10 if you have anything
4:38
that you'd like to see me do how 2 on
4:40
make sure to send me an email I hope you
