Swype VP Confirms Talks With Apple

By

Swype

After spending several years in beta testing, the popular Swype keyboard made its official debut on Android earlier this week, and at the moment it’s only available on a small number of platforms. But there’s a chance that we could see Swype’s typing technology on iOS in the future.

Swype vice president Aaron Sheedy has confirmed that his company has held talks with Apple, sparking speculation that suggests the pair are working together to develop a “revolutionary” new keyboard — possibly for Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 update.

The Teacher Who Illustrated This “Think Different” Chalkboard Was The Ultimate Apple Fan [Image]

By

PP5Bxnz

Wow, this is incredible. Redditor Kepgnar works in the tech department of a charter school. Every month, one of the departments has to put together a message for the school’s official announcement chalkboard.

Here’s what Kepgnar came up with: a meticulously drawn “Think Different.” logo with an actually working QR code which, when scanned, leads to the YouTube version of the original commercial narrated by Steve Jobs.

How’d Kepgnar do the QR code? They designed it, then projected it onto the chalkboard and traced it. Talk about thinking differently.

Who Is The Average iPhone Jailbreaker? [Infographic]

By

iPhone-Jailbreak-2-a

If you jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, you are most likely to be an American male under the age of 30, you’re using either an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1 and your phone probably crashes around once or twice a week.

Or so says, at least, the following infographic, cataloguing the responses of 400 redditors, trying to put together a picture of the typical jailbreaker. The responses are illuminating, but definitely put the geoscape of jailbreaking in very clear perspective. Check it out.

Saurik Doesn’t Have Much Control Over Cydia And That’s A Good Thing

By

saurik

If you love jailbreaking and all the little tweaks that come with it, then you’re probably very familiar with Cydia. It’s the number one place to go to if you want to find hacks for your iPhone or iPad, but it also kind of sucks at the same time.

Cydia is massively unorganized and slow when there’s a rush to jailbreak. Most people want to blame its creator, Saurik, for its weaknesses, but in a recent discussion on jailbreaking, Saurik admitted those things bug him too, but there’s not much he can do about it.

The Worst Possible Way To Protect Your MacBook From Scars [Image]

By

plastidippingmacbook

There are a couple of different ways to protect your MacBook from abuse, but this is a new one to us. A Reddit user decided that he was tired of the dings and scratches on the front of his 2008 MacBook, so he grabbed a can of Plasti-dip and gave it a nice plastic coating to cover everything up.

It’s either the most brilliant way to cover up your MacBook’s scars, or the absolute worst. We’re not sure. Plasti Dip was originally created to help people rubberize the grips of their tools, but people have started putting it on everything from car bumpers to pieces of art.

Once you’re tired of the plastic coating you can just peel it off, but we think a protective case would be a better idea so you don’t get plastic in your USB port.

Here’s what the MacBook looked like after its final Plasti Dip coating:

This Is How Steve Jobs Would Design A Birthday Card For His Girlfriend [Image]

By

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 10.05.27 AM

For his girlfriend’s birthday, Alex and some of her friends all chipped in to get her a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

The finishing touch, though? The piece de resistance, as it were? A brilliant custom birthday card that apes the style of an official Apple product announcement.

That’s a hell of a gift, with a hell of a personal touch. Alex’s girlfriend better marry that guy.

Jailbreak Hacker Planetbeing: “It’s Likely” Jailbreaking iOS 7 Will Be Harder

By

planetbeing1

planetbeing — the famed hacker who is part of the team behind the latest iOS 6 jailbreak — is now taking part in a Reddit AMA, answering questions posed to him by the community.

Although the AMA has just begun, Planetbeing has already opined on the future of iOS jailbreaking… and he says that while it’s too early to be sure, his belief is that iOS 7 will be a much tougher nut to crack than iOS 6.

Check Out Bill Gates’s Huge Windows Surface Computer [Image]

By

Bill Gates answering Reddit questions on his huge Surface computer.

Bill Gates is doing an IAmA on Reddit right now. Basically, he’s telling everyone what it’s like to be a super-rich philanthropist who wants to rid the world of polio and other diseases. Bill’s a pretty cool guy. He likes to tour garbage dumps and missile silos with his kids. He loves Weezer. And he even liked Pirates of Silicon Valley.

One thing you didn’t know about Bill Gates, though, is that he uses a ginormous touchscreen computer. Like, yeah, he’s got a Surface Pro, but that’s not enough for him right now. Look at the size of that beast in the picture above.

I just got my Surface Pro a week ago and it is very nice. I am using a Perceptive Pixel display right now – huge Windows 8 touch whiteboard. These will come down in price over time and be pervasive…

So while we’re all over here happy with our new 7.9-inch iPad mini screens, Bill is living it up on a touchscreen that’s bigger than your living room wall. And you know what? For a guy who’s trying to rid the world of HIV and reduce carbon emissions, we think he deserves every pixel on that humongous display.

Reddit App Alien Blue Gets Updated With Moderator Tools, UI Improvements And More

By

alienblueappupdate

I could get lost in Reddit for days. It’s beautiful. It’s horrible. If it weren’t for Alien Blue my Reddit binging would be confined to my desktop, but alas, they make a hell of an app that feeds my addiction on the iPhone too.

To make things even better (or worse), Alien Blue just received a major update this week that makes browsing Reddit from your iPhone more alluring than ever. They’ve added a crapload of UI improvements, some new moderator tools, better navigation, and a ton of other stuff all for free.

Here are the release notes on everything new in version 2.7:

Verizon Catches Dev Paying Chinese Workers To Do His Job So He Can Browse The Web

By

Verizon Wireless has helped a critical infrastructure company based in the United States catch one of its developers paying Chinese workers to do his job so that he could browse the Internet all day. “Bob” outsourced all of his work to China and paid the workers just a fraction of his six-figure salary so that he could spend his time on sites like Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, and eBay.

Verizon has revealed the fascinating story in a new case study.

UPS Delivery Guy Caught Stealing A FedEx-ed iPad On Tape [Video]

By

ups-theif-580x327

Going to the store at this time of year is an excruciatingly painful affair. We begin our Christmas shopping months early, and anything we need to get in December is bought online. Unfortunately for some, however, not everything they order online actually shows up.

As courier companies struggle to keep up with the surge in packages, it’s not uncommon for items to go missing, or for them to be delivered to the wrong address. But in some cases, shameless delivery drivers think it’s okay to reward themselves with items you’ve paid for during gift giving season. In the video below, a UPS driver is caught stealing an iPad that was left by FedEx just hours earlier.

The Most Meta Use Of Apple Stickers We’ve Ever Seen [Image]

By

mbwK5

What are you supposed to do with all the Apple logo stickers you get with each iPhone, iPad, and Mac purchase? Like, yeah I guess you could put one on your car if you’re into that, but then what do you do with the other 24 stickers you’ve collected over the years?

Redditor ebinellis decided to go super-meta and make an Apple sticker made out of Apple stickers. He says it’s still a work in progress, but unless he turns it into a Steve Jobs Apple-sticker-mural we think his work here is done.

Saying F**k You Could Get You To The Head Of The AppleCare Line

By

"I'll keep swearing until I get a human."

Nobody likes speaking to an automated phone system — they’re more unreliable than Siri — but a lot of companies use them, including Apple. You don’t necessarily have to speak to them for very long, however. Simply say the F-word next time you phone AppleCare and straight away you’ll be transferred to a human being — though your problem may not get solved any quicker.

Here’s A Quick Way To Make Your Broken iPhone Look Cool Again [Image]

By

webbing

You broke the back glass of your iPhone 4, but you’re not eligible for an iPhone 5 upgrade just yet. Maybe you forgot to buy AppleCare+. Yeah, you could go and get the back glass replaced for $29, but if you want to save some money and make your iPhone look unique while you wait for your upgrade eligibility you can try what this Redditor did.

Rather than buy a new back plate they added splashes of paint or nail polish into the cracks to give it a funky look. Who knows what will happen if that paint seeps into the components, but when your iPhone is already busted, you might as well throw caution to the wind and try something weird.

The Absolute Worst iPhone 5 Delivery Experience Of All Time [Image]

By

delivery

Imagine powering through your work day, high off the anticipation of a new iPhone 5 waiting for you at home. You keep checking the UPS package tracking to make sure they drop it off and leave it on your back porch because you’re not there to bring it inside.

Pulling up to your house, you can feel your heartbeat pulsing with excitement in your fingertips, so you run to the backyard to retrieve the new love of your life. And there it is. Shredded to pieces by your cute doggy who really, really needed a chew toy. Does AppleCare+ cover dog attacks?

President Barack Obama Is Taking Questions On Reddit From His MacBook

By

oz0a7

If you’ve been watching Twitter, you know that U.S. President Barack Obama is participating in Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit. While celebrities and tech personalities will often opt to use Reddit as a tool for fan engagement, this is the first time anyone as high up as the big ‘O’ himself has jumped on board.

You can find Obama’s AMA thread here, but Reddit seems to be buckling under the weight of traffic. If you can’t get through, try hitting refresh.

Obama has been spotted using Apple products multiple times in the past, and is a self-admitted fan. During one interview he noted that Steve Jobs had personally given him an iPad “early.”

Here’s What The New 13-inch MacBook Air Looks Like When X-Rayed [Image]

By

xray

When your dad’s a radiologist you probably get to see all kinds of neat crap get x-rayed, because hey, why not take an x-ray of those apples and carrots before you put them in a blend? Maybe the radiation will make you into a super mutant. You’re the boss of the magical x-ray machine and can do whatever you want.

That’s kind of what happened to one Redditor. They ordered a new MacBook Air, but when it arrived their dad didn’t tell him it arrived. Instead he took it to his lab, x-rayed it, and gave his son the x-ray to tell him that his new Mac was finally here. Ain’t that sweet?

Apple May Be Working On A Top Secret Asymmetric Screw To Lock You Out Of Your Devices Forever [Updated]

By

fkyQS
Forget Pentalobe screws, Apple's next-gen screw design could lock DIYers out of their Macs once and for all.

Self-repairability is often an aspect of Apple’s modern product design that gets Cupertino blasted by critics, with the Retina MacBook Pro being deemed “the least repairable laptop yet” by repair experts iFixIt. But if the leaked image above of a next-generation assymetric screw Apple is reportedly working on is to be believed, things are about to get a lot worse for Mac and iDevice owners who like to tinker with their devices.

How The Smart Cover Security Vulnerability Reunited A Man With His Lost iPad

By

dark_gray_smart_cover-e1319465768894.jpg

Losing your iPad is probably a horrifying experience. It’s never happened to me, but if it did I would probably roll up into the fetal position and sob uncontrollably on the hard floor of the city bus until someone gave it back. Maybe I’m exaggerating a tiny bit, but it’d be a really really sad day in my life.

The worst part about losing your iPad is knowing that someone else is going to find it and they’re not going to give it back. All of your photos, iBooks, and hard work on Fieldrunners 2 is now theirs. Except sometimes an incredible story pops up that restores your faith in humanity, like how this kid on Reddit found a lost iPad and worked on finding the owner for 4 months.

This Is The Only Thing You Must Know About Shooting Video On Your iPhone [Image]

By

iphonetutorial

Vertical Video Syndrome is a very serious problem, but it’s totally preventable. Next time you’re sitting on your couch, watching your baby and cat play together and think, “Oh snap, the spawn of my loins is like sooo freaking cute! I just totally need to film him for the 73rd time and upload it to Facebook for my friends.” That’s cool, go ahead. Film the crap out of your baby. But turn your iPhone horizontal so we can all enjoy that footage.

Only you can prevent Vertical Video Syndrom, so make sure to politely share this image with all your friends, and make the internet a safer place.

This Is The Worst Thing That Could Ever Happen To Your iPod [Image]

By

disabled

Don’t forget your iPhone’s password, because if you do your device might get disabled for  a few decades. That’s what happened to this poor fellow’s iPod Touch. After erroneously entering his passcode ten times the iPod locked up and said it can’t be used for another 22,338,550 minutes. That’s 42.5 years he’s going to have to wait to listen to The Biebs new album. The poor sucker.

The longest a time lock on iOS is supposed to last is 60 minutes, so this is obviously a bug. A really bad bug. Should this ever happens to your iPod you can fix it by plugging the device into your Mac and restoring it to your last backup.

Why You Should Never Use AirPlay To Stream Your Home Sex Movies [Humor]

By

It's censored, but it's porn streaming over AirPlay.
It's censored, but it's porn streaming over AirPlay.

If you’ve ever used AirPlay to connect speakers or your AppleTV to your iPhone, you’ll know that you’ve got to be diligent about disconnecting your device afterwards, lest you suddenly start piping sounds or video to somewhere else accidentally.

How bad can it be if you don’t remember to do that? Really, really bad. In fact, this is pretty much the worst case scenario we could think of: one Redditor who forgot to disconnect his iPhone from his Apple TV via AirPlay ended up showing his in-laws a homemade pornographic film featuring their daughter.

The MacBook Air Is So Thin The Sun Can Shine Right Through it [Image]

By

vBjAD

No one would ever argue that the MacBook Air is a fatty. At just 0.68 inches at its thickest point, the MacBook Air is thinner all-around than most axe blades, which will surely come in handy in a zombie apocalypse to come.

But how thin is 0.68 inches, really? Here’s a test you can show your friends to wow them. Open up your MacBook Air, then hold it up to the sun. The MacBook Air is so thin you can actually see sunlight shining through the screen through the Apple logo in back.

Try it for yourself, it really works (and it’s quite eerie). Thanks to Redditor Flemming Madsen for the great image and tip!
