Many of the greatest iOS hackers in the world will be gathered in San Francisco this weekend.

JailbreakCon kicks off this weekend, and Cult of Mac will be there!

Scores of hackers are expected to gather for JailbreakCon in South San Francisco Conference Center on September 29th.

Jailbreaking, the process of circumventing Apple’s restrictions in iOS, has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years. In response to the mainstream interest in jailbreaking and everything it has to offer, JailbreakCon gathers the greatest hackers, developers, and users together in one place to learn and share new ideas.

Whether you’re a diehard jailbreaker or an interested onlooker, there’s going to be a lot of interesting stuff going on at JailbreakCon this year. The iPhone 5 and iOS 6 will be hot topics, and there’s a good chance we’ll hear news regarding a jailbreak for Apple’s newest smartphone.

Cult of Mac will be at JailbreakCon as an official media partner, so stay tuned for breaking coverage from the convention floor! Here’s what to expect:

Another great reason to install iOS 6.

Back in August, we told you about a serious SMS security flaw with the iPhone that opened the door to text message spoofing. At the time, Apple told users they could protect themselves by using its iMessage service rather that traditional SMS messages, but the Cupertino company appears to have rectified the issue in iOS 6.

We're still no closer to a third-generation Apple TV jailbreak.

If you’ve been browsing the Internet every day in the hope that someone’s going to announce a jailbreak for the third-generation Apple TV you bought back in March, then look away now. iOS hacker Pod2g has confirmed that neither he, nor any other hacker he knows of, is working on an exploit for the Apple’s latest set-top box.

Back in August of last year, famed jailbreak hacker Comex — the mind responsible for the famed JailbreakMe exploit — hung up his old hacker hat and went to work at Apple as an intern.

Here’s a coincidence then. In iOS 6, the top secret, much guarded exploit used by developers to root their devices — first founded by Comex! — has suddenly been closed after being open for two years, as recent jailbreak superstar pod2g just made note on his Twitter account.

iOS 6 Murders The Latest Jailbreak… For Now

Don't expect to see this running on iOS 6 anytime soon.
Don't expect to see this running on iOS 6 anytime soon.

Shortly after the Chronic Dev Team released their iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak a couple weeks ago, Pod2g revealed that they had already begun work on a jailbreak for iOS 6. It seems, however, that it’s going to be a long time before we’re hacking Apple’s next iOS release.

According to Dev Team member MuscleNerd, iOS 6 breaks a whole lot of stuff, including Cydia, and it’ll be a while before there’s an iOS 6 jailbreak.

A lot has happened in the world of jailbreaking over the past few weeks. The Chronic Dev Team, a group of mastermind hackers from around the world, recently released Absinthe 2.0, a tool that quickly jailbreaks iOS 5.1.1 on all iOS devices, including the third-gen iPad.

As with the release of any new jailbreak, millions of eyes are turned to the taboo process of freeing an iOS device from Apple’s restrictions to gain access to Cydia, the App Store’s quirky stepbrother. What about the brainiac hackers who keep Apple on its toes? The newest face of jailbreaking, “pod2g,” recently gave a brief interview.

During today’s Jailbreak Live event at the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam, Pod2g and his “dream team” of iOS hackers took to the stage to unveil the long-awaited iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak. The team also explained how the Absinthe 2.0 software works its magic and opens your device up to a world filled with apps and tweaks that Apple never wanted you to install on your device.

Here’s how it works.

Hackers Are Making Progress On iOS 6 Jailbreak Before Apple Even Releases A Beta

Hackers are one step ahead of Apple when it comes to iOS 6.
Hackers are one step ahead of Apple when it comes to iOS 6.

Apple is expected to give us a sneak peek at iOS 6 during its Worldwide Developers Conference this June, and after its announcement, the company is likely to issue the first beta to registered developers. Until then, no one knows what iOS 6 will have in store for us, but that isn’t preventing hackers from making progress on its jailbreak.

They haven’t even released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 yet — though it’s expected to go live very shortly — and already Pod2g and his team “have a part” of the jailbreak for Apple’s next-generation iOS operating system.

We’ve been waiting a long time for Pod2g and his team to release the untethered jailbreak for devices running iOS 5.1.1, but that wait could soon be over. It was already confirmed earlier this week that Absinthe 2.0 was just a matter of days away, sparking speculation that hackers will pull a “one more thing” announcement on the last day of this week’s “Hack in the Box” conference in Amsterdam.

According to the event’s official Twitter feed, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

We told you over the weekend that the untethered jailbreak for iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 is dropping this week. The hacker who’s been spearheading the upcoming jailbreak, pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team, confirmed that the jailbreak was nearly done and arriving in a “matter of days.”

Coincidentally, the Chronic Dev Team will be presenting at the annual Hack in the Box (HITB) conference this week in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Since the 5.1.1. jailbreak is expected to drop this week, we’re placing bets on a release this Friday during the team’s keynote.
