Apple began sending out MobileMe eviction notices last week. The notices remind anyone still using MobileMe that they have until the end of June to transition to iCloud and/or copy all data stored in their MobileMe accounts to their Mac or PC. Any files stored in MobileMe’s range of services that can’t be converted to iCloud will be deleted. If you opt not to use iCloud, all data in your MobileMe account will be deleted.

Although iCloud offers several advances over MobileMe, there are some MobileMe services that don’t have direct iCloud equivalents. These include MobileMe Galleries for sharing photos and videos, website creation using Apple’s iWeb, and iDisk remote storage and file sharing. File and information sync is available using iCloud, but the functionality is implemented a bit differently than in MobileMe.

There isn’t a single online service that delivers quite the same mix of features and functionality that Apple offered with MobileMe but by combining some apps and services, you can get pretty close to MobileMe’s feature set.

Apple's going to destroy MobileMe in 30 days, so hurry and get out.

Apple is hell bent on detonating their MobileMe service on June 30th. If you’re still using it, they want you out, and now. Earlier this morning Apple sent email notices to customers who still use MobileMe, iWeb, and iDisk instead of iCloud and told them to pack their lovely treasures and head over to Me.com before everything gets lost in a digital fireball of destruction in 30days.

How will you sync System Preferences between your Macs? Well, if you ask Apple nicely (and you get all your friends and family to ask, too), you might just get those features back.

Apple has issued an update to its MobileMe iDisk application today and version 1.2 brings some welcome improvements. As well as support for multitasking and fast app switching, iDisk is now a universal application and works natively on the iPad.

What’s more, iPad users can now export documents from iDisk in to iBooks or office applications like Apple’s own Pages, Numbers & Keynote offerings.

Another big improvement is the ability to listen to music from within the iDisk application – this means you can save space on your device by uploading your tracks to an iDisk folder and then listening to them from there. Obviously this will require a data connection to your iDisk, however.

The full list of improvements is as follows:

  • Designed for both iPhone and iPad
  • Multitasking support for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS (iOS 4 required).
  • Quickly switch to another app and back to iDisk
  • Play audio from your iDisk while using another app
  • When app is opened, the last file or directory viewed is displayed
  • Option to open iDisk documents in compatible apps such as iBooks
  • When sharing a file, an email can be sent from any configured email account
  • The URL for a shared file can be copied and pasted
  • Various stability improvements

iDisk is the last of Apple’s MobileMe apps to be updated for multitasking and iOS 4. All we’re waiting on now is the MobileMe Gallery app improvements and iPad support!
