Did Apple ByPass Samsung for the iPad 2’s A5 Chip?

By

The original iPad's A4 chip came from Samsung.
The original iPad's A4 chip came from Samsung.

Remember all the talk about Apple’s $7.8 billion deal with Samsung to supply components for the iPhone and iPad? One of the concerns was that Samsung also produces the Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab tablet. We may now be seeing the rethinking of that marriage of convenience. Samsung reportedly is being passed-over for a Taiwan-based chipmaker to supply Apple’s iPad 2, as well as a rumored iPhone 5.

The Cupertino, Calif. tech giant is said to have signed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to produce the dual-core A5 chip, which will build upon the previous A4 chip produced by Samsung and part of the original iPad. Samsung also is expected to update its Android-based Galaxy products.

Will The Apple TV Go 1080p Thanks To The iPad 2’s A5?

Now that Apple has tipped their new, dual-core A5 SoC as the central cortex of the iPad 2, it’s reasonable to expect that the chip will start creeping down the rest of the iOS line-up later this year. That means an A5-equipped iPhone 5 in June, followed by an A5-equipped iPod Touch in September.

But even though it doesn’t look like one, there’s one other member of the iOS family: the Apple TV. Can we expect Apple to update their set-top box offering as well?

64GB iPhone 4 Prototype Spotted In China

By

For those of us who hate juggling tracks on our iPhones, a 64GB iPhone 4 would be a godsend. It should be more than technically possible: the iPod Touch comes in a 64GB variety, after all. For whatever reason, though, Apple’s let almost five generations of iPhone pass without rolling out a 64GB iPhone.

At least it appears that they thought about it, though. MIC Gadget points out that some alleged iPhone 4 prototypes with 64GB storage capacities that are making their way into the Chinese grey market right now.

Technically, this could be faked, but it looks legit, right down to the correct amount of useable space reported within the iPhone 4’s settings (at 59.1GB, it’s identical to the amount reported by a 64GB iPad). Also, like the found Gizmodo iPhone 4, the back shell of the leaked prototype has the same “XXGB” demarkation.

Obviously, we never ended up getting a 64GB iPhone 4, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that 64GB is the new high-end iPhone 5. It certainly looks like Apple wants it to be.

Apple To Devs: Update Your Apps For iPad 2

By

upate_apps

One big question we had here at Cult of Mac when the iPad 2 was first announced was whether or not developers would have to update their apps to take advantage of the iPad 2’s faster, dual-core A5 SoC. Now Apple’s clarifying the matter: no, you don’t have to, but it’ll help.

According to a new note posted on the iOS Dev Center, Apple has asked devs to update their apps for the iPad 2 in order to take advantage of the new hardware. Mentioning that most operations inside of applications will be faster just by dint of the jump to a dual-core processor, Apple concedes that software can become faster still if they tune up their software for the iPad 2 with tools like OpenGL Profiler. Devs are further asked to enhance their apps with the “new user experiences” made possible by the iPad 2’s cameras and gyroscope/accelerometer combo.

The first-gen iPad was a sneak peek at what Apple had in store when it came to the iPhone 4’s hardware, and we imagine the iPad 2 will be no different in this regard when it comes to the iPhone 5. Developers honing their apps for the iPad 2 now will be able to reap the benefits immediately upon the release of the next iPhone.

Survivor Case for iPhone 4 May Not Survive Your Patience [Review]

By

SurvivorCase

The Griffin Survivor case for iPhone 4, which retails for $49.99 and works on all iPhone 4 models, is the latest rugged case leaping out of the gate running neck and neck for top dog with the likes of the Ballistic HC and many others. I was surprised to see another new case this late after the release of the iPhone 4 with the iPhone 5 just around the corner. However, it may be that the vendors know something we don’t. Perhaps the iPhone 5 will share the same dimensions as the iPhone 4 just like the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Griffin labels the Survivor as “Armored Ready for Anything. ” I don’t think so and I’d like to explain why I say that.

iSkin Solo, Revo4, And Duet Cases for iPhone 4 [Review]

By

iphone4black620

iSkin has been my favorite case maker for longer than I can remember. I’ve bought their cases for iPhones and iPods. I liked some of those cases and others I didn’t like at all. Some of them were just okay, but in the end I always used one of iSkin’s cases on my iDevices.

I had to experiment with them, because the cases were like a good pair of shoes. You need to try them on and decide what’s best for you. I hope that this review will help you to make the right choice when choosing an iSkin case for your iPhone 4.

Apple Patent Gives Glimpse At iPhone NFC Ambitions

In an otherwise routine disgorgement of recently awarded design patents for extant Apple products, one notable little slip: an E-Wallet icon tattooed in at the bottom of a pen-and-ink lithograph representing the familiar iOS home screen of every new iPhone.

That E-Wallet icon could betray Apple’s ambitions for near-field communications with a future NFC-capable iPhone 5. Near-field communications would not only allow future iPhones to be used for mobile credit card payments just by waving the device with Obi-Wan-style nonchalance in front of a teller or kiosk, but also are rumored to enable Apple’s ambitious remote computing strategy by allowing Mac users to effectively carry their most critical Mac files and settings around with them.

Presumably, E-Wallet would be the iOS app giving user access to NFC data. Not that it will necessarily be called that: as Patently Apple points out, E-Wallet is trademarked to someone else, and trademark trolls are already sitting on three seaerate iWallet trademarks, hoping to get Cupertino to write them a check.

Poisoned Chinese Workers Ask Apple For Help

By

Just as Wintek has scored the contract to make touchscreens for the white iPhone 5, Chinese workers at the Taiwanese company’s Suzhou plant have urged Apple to look into the slate of chemical poisonings at the plant which they said could still hurt their health.

The issue is hexyl hydride, a chemical used by Wintek between May 2008 and August 2009 instead of alcohol to speed up production of Apple touchscreens. In an open letter published in a local Chinese newspaper, workers referred to hexyl hydride as “a killer that strikes invisibly.”

Symptoms of hexyl hydride poisoning include sudden numbness in hands, swelling and pain in the feet, tiredness and faintness. Long-term exposure can lead to permanent nerve and eye damage. 137 Wintek workers had been hospitalized because of the poisonings.

iPad 2 Could Be Delayed Until June

By

ipad2

Given Apple’s history fulfilling a yearly iOS device refresh cycle, we’ve been taking the iPad 2’s debut in late March or early April as read, but if a recent analyst report is to be believed, Cupertino might very well miss that day… delaying the iPad 2 into June.

According to a report by Yuanta analysts Vincent and Alison Chen, the iPad 2 may be delayed until June because of “production bottlenecks” at manufacturer Hon Hai Precision.

“Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production and it is taking time to resolve them,” said Chen in the report. “As a number of Android 3.0 tablets are being launched in April and May, the delay in iPad 2 shipments may give the Android camp a brief window of opportunity.”
