The $1 billion Apple campus under construction in Austin will reportedly include a six-story hotel.

There’ll eventually be room for 15,000 employees in the extensive collection of buildings that are going up now in Texas. Adding this hotel allows visitors to stay on site.

As part of ongoing efforts to cut down on the use of conflict minerals, Apple removed 18 smelters and refiners from its supply chain last year.

Apple removed companies unwilling to submit to third-party audits of their premises. By taking them out of its supply chain, Apple’s able to claim 100% audit participation on the part of companies it works with.

Apple has bought its first ever commercial batch of carbon-free aluminum for use in its products.

It’s the result of a $144 million collaboration between Apple, the governments of Canada and Quebec, and Alcoa Corp and Rio Tinto, two of the world’s biggest aluminum suppliers. Elysis is the name of the new venture. Hopefully its products will be coming soon to an Apple device near you.

Apple today confirmed it has started construction on a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, that will open in 2022. The facility will initially house 5,000 people, but it has the capacity to grow to 15,000.

It’s part of a broader plan to expand Apple’s prescence in the city, where it has already started producing the all-new Mac Pro.

The company was awarded the Green Supply Chain CITI Outstanding Brand title for “environmental leadership” across its entire supply chain. It’s a recognition of all the work Apple has done in the country.

Ceres is a sustainability nonprofit that works with companies to tackle environmental issues. Cook described how Apple views battling climate change as an opportunity.

Apple is helping to restore grasslands in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills

As part of its environmental efforts, Apple recently made a donation to nonprofit Conservation International. Apple’s money will help restore degraded grasslands in the Chyulu Hills of Kenya.

“By restoring tens of thousands of hectares in the Chyulu Hills, we can remove carbon from the air, protect a critical wildlife corridor for elephants, and support the livelihoods of the Maasai people,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of environmental, social, and policy initiatives.
