The new messaging capabilities built into OS X Yosemite make your Mac even more useful
0:07
for day-to-day communication. Now you can send SMS text messages and make phone calls from your Mac, which is super
0:14
helpful if you're forgetful like I am and leave your iPhone in another room
0:19
Today I'm going to show you how to set up continuity. So let's get started
0:24
Firstly, I want to point out that this doesn't work with every Mac with Yosemite installed
0:28
You can check if your Mac is compatible by clicking on the Apple icon at the top left
0:33
going to About This Mac, then System Report. And under Bluetooth, there will be a hand-off section which will inform you if your Mac
0:40
will work with hand-off. Once you've made sure that your Mac is compatible, we need to check that both our iPhone and
0:46
our Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the Bluetooth on both devices is also
0:52
switched on. To enable hand-off on your Mac, go to System Preferences, then General, and enable Allow hand-off
0:59
Also, check that it has been enabled on your iPhone by going to Settings, then General
1:04
Hand-off and Suggested Apps, and again make sure it's enabled there. Once all that is done, you're ready to make phone calls and text on your Mac
1:12
To make a phone call, just go to the FaceTime app and type in a name, phone number or email
1:18
of who you'd like to call, and click on the phone icon
1:22
You will know the Mac is using your iPhone by using the heading, and off you go
1:28
If you're familiar with messages on a Mac, then there's nothing extra you need to do
1:31
to send an SMS message to a non-iPhone user. Simply type in their name or number, and off you go
1:38
Their name at the top will change to green when you hover over it if you're using SMS
1:41
to message them, or blue if they're using iMessage. You can also alter any of your message settings on your iPhone by going to Settings and choosing Messages
1:51
Here you can control whether you want to use iMessage or not, decide which numbers to block, how long to store messages, and so much more
1:58
So there you have it, a really quick masterclass for messages on iOS and OS X Yosemite
