Hi, I'm Leander Caney. I'm the editor and publisher of CultOfMac.com and this is another Caney's Corner

The iPad. At one time this was the future of computing. Launched five years ago, 2010. At the time, you know
0:17
I think we all thought that we weren't going to be using desktop machines and laptops anymore and that we would be using this
0:23
Thing is, sales have been flat and declining the last couple of years
0:28
It came out of the gate like a rocket and everyone bought one
0:31
but no one has been upgrading them for the last couple of years. There's a whole bunch of different reasons for this. One of them is because, well, people keep them for several years
0:39
Also, people share them. And maybe, you know, Apple has something to do with this
0:44
Have they been good guardians of the iPad? Have they developed it, the hardware and the software, in ways that make it a
0:52
complete must-have buy? So I think that one of the most important changes in the iPad is coming in iOS 9 and that is with
1:01
split-screen multitasking. This is really going to change the way that you use an iPad and it will make it much, much better for working on
1:11
But there's an interesting wrinkle as well. The interesting thing about split-screen multitasking is that it is limited to only the latest iPad hardware, the iPad Air 2
1:21
And this is interesting because previous generations of iPads, you know, may or may not be able to run this. It may be a bit degraded
1:30
You may need that CPU and graphics horsepower to be able to do this
1:34
But I suspect that this may be one of the things that Apple is doing to encourage people to upgrade
1:41
their hardware more frequently. And that's by doing special software-only features. How many features can you add to a piece of glass
1:48
You know, there are only so many things you can do with it and making productivity, making software like split-screen multitasking exclusive to certain devices is another way of doing it
1:59
So not only does split-screen multitasking make your iPad more relevant and better for work, it makes your old iPads
2:07
obsolete. There's another amazing Canis Corner brought to you by Cult of Mind.com and I've got a joke for you
