That's the question
0:01
Oh right, so the iPhone 15 Pro has a weird USB charging problem
0:06
This is actually hilarious. You may have saw this story. It blew up on Reddit this week
0:12
And I guess the genesis of this is this guy plugged in his phone to his anchor charging brick
0:23
and when he came back, his phone was dead but his charger was full
0:27
And that's because, you know how when you plug in an iPhone 15 Pro into another iPhone 15 Pro
0:35
remember what happens, we talked about this in a previous show, Apple confirmed, that the phone with the higher level of charge
0:41
will charge the phone with the lower level of charge. And apparently that seems to be happening
0:48
with charging bricks as well. I don't know how pervasive this issue is
0:52
but it is absolutely hilarious. So people have been plugging their phones in
0:56
to charging bricks only to come back and see that their phones are dead
1:01
but their charging bricks are full. Which is obviously not the way it's supposed to work
1:05
I just kept thinking, imagine if you're at a place like Disneyland where you use your phone all the time
1:10
You rely on your phone and it's almost dead, you plug it in and you come back
1:14
and you realize that it's totally dead and that your charging brick is now full
1:18
Well of course, all you have to do is unplug it and plug it back in because the phone will take a charge
1:26
if it determines that it's the one with the smaller charge and the brick has more of a charge
1:31
But if you plug it into a brick with a charge that's lower than your phone
1:34
apparently there are instances where the brick will be the one that starts getting charged from your phone
1:40
I don't know if Apple can fix this. I was reading and doing some research about this
1:45
I mean, USB-C seems like it's a pretty straightforward connection type but I guess it's like a hellscape
1:51
of different connection technologies and all this stuff. It's like Thunderbolt works with USB-C
2:00
USB-C is USB-3, USB-2, USB-1. There's all these different standards that are built into this one port
2:07
and there's a lot of different communication that has to happen and apparently the wires got crossed
2:11
the streams got crossed, which we know is never supposed to happen. And then these phones started charging power bricks
2:18
I'm just curious, for anyone in the chat, have you noticed that this has happened
2:22
I haven't used a charging brick on my 15 Pro Max yet
2:28
but now I'm tempted to try it, especially before I take my charging brick anywhere
2:32
just to make sure that my phone is actually the one being charged here
2:37
So that is one issue that actually popped up this week but I don't think this is a huge
2:42
this isn't a gate by any means. And all the other gates have completely
2:47
you know, have completely crumbled or have been revealed to be nothing but small issues
2:54
that are actually not big ordeals at all. I thought this was something that was like a known thing
3:01
This is how USB-C operates. This is part of the USB-C standard
3:07
There's a whole, everyone is correct in that USB-C is kind of a mess and it's like 12 different things
3:13
crammed into one port that looks the same so you can't really ever have a good idea
3:18
of what's actually going on behind the scenes. But this is a standard. Apple adopted the USB-C standard as it is specified
3:25
as agreed upon by the open body. Like when you plug two devices into each other
3:30
they do this negotiation thing that you don't really see happen but then they decide which device charges the other
3:37
Like the battery percentage is one thing that's a factor. The other factor that I don't see a lot of people
3:43
talking about is that the order of which device you plug in first also has a big difference
3:49
So I think supposedly you're more likely to get what you want if you plug the cable
3:53
into the power brick first and then plug the other end of the cable into the phone after that
3:58
I haven't seen a lot of people- I foresee a in-depth how-to on this. Well, we could if I were to have a USB-C iPhone
4:05
but I do not. Oh! Gotta get one on El-Kinney's dime for research purposes
4:13
Charge it to the company card. He won't even notice. He has like $5,000 lunches
4:19
He'll notice like nine months from now. Like, what happened? Oh my god
4:25
Did you see this $900 charge
