hey everyone this is Michael with Cult
0:06
of Mac here and today I'm going to show
0:07
you how you can get the basic features
0:09
that are going to be introduced in OS 10
0:11
mountain lion today I've been asked by
0:14
people if they should buy a developer
0:15
license so they can use mountain lion
0:17
now if you know they should wait or not
0:20
and I always suggest people wait because
0:23
what you can actually do is with a
0:25
couple different applications simulate
0:28
the features that will appear in W 10
0:30
Mountain line uh right now with current
0:32
existing applications and I'll show you
0:34
uh which ones today so one of the
0:37
biggest new features with mountain lion
0:39
is the integration of iMessage right
0:41
into the OS and this is something that
0:44
users who aren't on mountain lion can
0:46
actually get today and you might know
0:48
this one already uh but you can actually
0:50
from Apple's website download a version
0:53
of messages and it's still in beta but
0:55
you can use it on Lon this version of
0:59
messages is exact like the version that
1:00
will'll ship with mountain line uh so
1:02
it's very much the same as what you'll
1:04
see and it replaces ey chat as you might
1:06
know so if you want to download this and
1:08
use it it's a little bit buggy but I'll
1:10
have a link uh below the video that you
1:12
can go and download messages beta
1:14
another one of the big features in
1:16
Mountain line is notification center as
1:18
you can see here and it's very much like
1:20
the iOS
1:21
counterpart there's actually an
1:23
application in the Mac App Store you
1:25
might have heard of called grow that can
1:27
simulate kind of the environment of not
1:29
notification center it's not quite as
1:31
clean or as polished uh but if you go up
1:33
to the Apple logo menu and you select
1:36
App Store and you search in the app
1:38
store for grow you'll find the app and
1:41
unfortunately it's not free uh but if
1:43
you really like the idea of notification
1:45
center and you haven't tried out grow I
1:47
would definitely recommend it so grow
1:50
just runs up in your menu bar here and
1:52
you can show this rollup menu uh and
1:54
this roll up when notifications come in
1:57
is a lot like notification center and if
1:59
you leave your Des for a while or
2:01
anything this rollup will automatically
2:03
show up and it shows you all your recent
2:05
notifications for any apps you might
2:07
have also if you go up to the grow
2:09
preferences you have a couple different
2:11
options here uh for the type of
2:13
notification you want so for example
2:16
this brushed one looks fairly similar to
2:19
the actual notification style that
2:21
you'll find in Mountain line so you can
2:23
simulate that very well another big
2:26
addition to Mountain line is the notes
2:27
app that you would have typically found
2:29
on the iPad and the iPhone and now
2:31
that's coming to the Mac OS as well
2:33
previously notes were managed within the
2:35
mail app and now it has its own app so
2:39
if you want to use the default Notes app
2:42
that comes on all your devices you can
2:44
still use it within mail in line and
2:47
it's a lot like it is in Mountain line
2:49
it's just not broken out into its own
2:51
app but if you're looking for a good
2:53
notes app that sys across all your
2:55
devices kind of like notes does in
2:57
Mountain line a good one I would
2:59
recommend is is Evernote so Evernote is
3:02
nice in that it works on all your
3:04
devices the iPad the iPhone and the Mac
3:08
so you can download and it'll syn across
3:10
all your devices and it works very well
3:12
and in some ways it's more full featured
3:14
than the notes app uh with you know
3:16
graphics and different things like that
3:18
uh it's very nice in addition some
3:21
people are excited about I'm personally
3:22
not but a lot of people are is airplane
3:25
mirroring and that's coming in M line as
3:28
well so airplane mirring essentially
3:30
lets you mirror what's on your Mac
3:32
screen to an Apple TV now I don't have
3:35
an Apple TV so it's not something I'm
3:37
too excited about uh but if you want to
3:39
do this with Lion you can download this
3:42
application called air parrot so it's
3:44
not free there's a limited trial and I
3:46
personally haven't been able to test it
3:47
out just because I don't have an Apple
3:49
TV but it works in very much the same
3:52
way as airplane mirroring will in
3:55
Mountain line so this is something you
3:57
might want to consider if you do have
3:59
Apple TV and you think you'd use this
4:02
feature a lot it actually looks like it
4:04
has more preferences than the real
4:05
AirPlay mirroring feature does in
4:07
Mountain Li uh Apple's version is pretty
4:09
stripped down and basic another feature
4:12
Apple's been bragging about is
4:13
gatekeeper so if you go into system
4:15
preferences and over to
4:17
Security you'll see that under General
4:20
you have these new options to allow
4:21
applications downloaded from anywhere
4:25
the Mac App Store and identifi
4:26
developers or just the Mac App Store and
4:28
you have some different changes to your
4:30
privacy settings in here that you don't
4:32
find in line and Snow Leopard and older
4:34
operating systems now while there's no
4:36
real replacement for gatekeeper in Lion
4:40
what you can do is install some security
4:43
applications if you're worried about
4:44
security I did a post not too long ago
4:47
here on culac about how to secure your
4:49
Mac from viruses in malware so if you
4:52
want to go check that out I talk about
4:54
some of the best security applications
4:56
to get and they can be really helpful
4:59
especially when fighting against new
5:01
malware that's been coming to Mac OS 10
5:04
so you also may know that the reminders
5:06
application is coming to mountain line
5:08
and it's just like the reminders app
5:09
that you find in iOS 5 unfortunately you
5:12
can't control the native reminders
5:14
application in any way in line uh you
5:17
can control the notes app but the
5:20
reminders app is pretty much off limits
5:23
so if you go to App Store there are some
5:26
alternatives for the time being an
5:28
option you might want to try is Wonder
5:30
list uh it's a free application and it
5:34
lets you create reminders in a similar
5:36
fashion to what you would do on the
5:38
reminders app now personally I like to
5:40
stick with reminders I find it you know
5:42
it's just basic and it's just what I
5:44
need but you might like something like
5:46
Wonder list that sinks across all your
5:47
devices and you can create tasks pretty
5:51
easily last but not least we have the
5:53
iCloud integration unfortunately that's
5:55
something that you can't really
5:57
replicate in any way with any
5:59
application
6:00
in lion or below so well I'd love to
6:03
tell you that there's an alternative
6:05
that you can use at this time there
6:06
really isn't and anything that you might
6:09
use to sync your documents and
6:11
applications with iCloud right now in
6:14
Lion is more of a work around than
6:16
anything and it's not as smooth as
6:18
you'll find in mountain lion but there's
6:20
a way that you can replicate at least
6:22
most of the features of mountain line in
6:24
Mac OS 10 line right now as always if
6:27
there's anything that you'd like to see
6:28
me do a hotu on make sure to send me an
6:30
email this is Michael with cult Mac and
6:32
I'll see you next time
