New iPhone 4 Orders Won’t Ship Until July 2

What a difference a day makes. If you were hoping to get Apple’s new iPhone 4, yesterday’s record-breaking flood of pre-sale purchases means you’ll have to wait until July 2 to receive the iconic handset, the Cupertino, Calif. company announced.

The delay will affect those consumers that did not place their preorder Tuesday. The nearly one-week difference is the first result of the crush of consumers hoping to lay claim to an iPhone on the first day Apple, the exclusive carrier AT&T, and some retailers began accepting pre-orders for the handset. Apple had hoped to ship the iPhone by June 24, the day the handset was supposed to be available nationwide.

The iPhone 3Gs, although lacking the features added to the iPhone 4, is still available for June 24 delivery for $99 with a two-year AT&T contract, according to Wednesday reports. AT&T said Tuesday was its busiest online sales day. The carrier announced new iPhone 4 orders would arrive June 25 or later, “depending on when the order is placed.” (Update: the carrier announced Wednesday it was “temporarily suspending” iPhone 4 pre-orders.) Meanwhile, callers to Apple’s 1-800-MY-Apple number, were turned away.

Talk of delays already recalls the week-long questions prompted by Apple attempting to obtain enough inventory to meet overwhelming demand for the iPad. At one point, CEO Steve Jobs acknowledged the problem, announcing: “We appreciate (customer) patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”
