A flashlight app for the iPhones reported half a million downloads following the devastating earthquake in Japan.

Flashlight 4, the handiwork of identical twins Chris and Ryan McGarty, is a free app that turns the flash from the camera into a flashlight.

There are dozens of flashlight apps available on iTunes; this one also allows the phone to send out a S-O-S in Morse code, using bursts of light.

“People are downloading it because they’re concerned about power outages,” said Chris McGarty, co-owner of software company 7th Gear.
