iPhone 4 Game Blends Asteroids with Virtual Reality…on the Holodeck [Daily Freebie]

If you’re lucky enough to posses an iPhone 4 and haven’t already downloaded freebie Ball Pit, do it now and play around with it a little. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Pretty cool, right? For those of you at work or still saving for an iPhone 4, the game is basically a first-person shooter set in the middle of a what looks like a holodeck from the later Star Trek shows, with the objective of shooting down the spheres that happen to be floating around in the big room with you.

But here’s the really cool part: As the player physically turns around in the real world, the perspective in the screen will display whatever is “virtually” in view in the direction the player is looking. The VR idea is sort of a little similar to will.i.am’s BEP360 app, only Ball Pit’s world is completely virtual (among other differences); but the basic concept of viewing a world through physically moving the iPhone 4 is the same. The updated version of Ball Pit, released a week or so ago, allows the player to jet around the virtual room via a thrust button — which makes it even more reminiscent of those old, very basic, goggled virtual reality games at high-end arcades in the mid-’90s.

Ball Pit is really more of a demonstration of the iPhone 4’s gyroscope tech than anything else; still, it’s one of those wow-factor apps you can’t really pass up experiencing, even if it’s just once. Plus, And of course, it makes a great “oh, you’re phone can’t do this? Hmm” prop to annoy all your Android toting friends with.
