The competition is scrambling to keep up with Apple after they finally succeeded in landing the Beatles catalogue for iTunes: in the hour since the announcement, Amazon has already dropped the price of at least two Beatles offerings to undercut Apple’s own prices on the same albums.

When we first checked the price of The Beatles Stereo Box Set on Amazon an hour ago, it was priced at $154.99, about $5 dollars north of the iTunes price of $149.99. In the fifty odd minutes since we checked that price last, Amazon has quietly dropped it: now if you buy the Beatles Box Set on Amazon, it will only cost you $129.99, undercutting the iTunes price by twenty dollars.

We imagine — but can’t confirm — that other Beatles albums are also being underpriced by Amazon in response to Apple’s introduction of the Beatles catalogue to iTunes. For example, the Beatles’ White Album currently costs $19.99 on iTunes, compared to the Amazon price of just $11.99. A cached Amazon page from earlier today priced the White Album at $18.99.

It’s a good time to be a Beatles fan: if you want the Beatles’ catalog instantly and digitally, you can buy it from iTunes. If you want it for cheap, you can get it at artificially low prices from Amazon. But don’t let the illusion of the iTunes’ versions being overpriced compared to buying the same album on CD from Amazon fool you: Amazon is very definitely offering huge discounts in a panic here.
