Future iPhone might go super slim

Apple reportedly found ways to “significantly” slim down the iPhone. The result will reportedly be part of the iPhone 17 series when it reaches customers next year.

The news comes hot on the heels of the M4 iPad Pro, the “thinnest Apple product ever,” according to the iPhone-maker.

2025 iPhone 17: Thin is in

The new 13-inch iPad Pro wows reviewers and users with how slim it is. At a mere 0.2 inches thick, it is 50% thinner than the iPhone 15 series, which comes in at just over 0.3 inches.

But a leaner iOS device is on the way. “Apple is developing a significantly thinner version of the iPhone,” The Information reported Friday.

Other design changes could be on the docket as well. “The rear cameras could be relocated from the upper-left corner of the phone’s back to the top center as part of the redesign,” The Information also said.

But this will supposedly be a case where less is more. More money. The trimmer version could have a higher price than the Pro Max model introduced at the same time, according to The Information‘s unnamed sources. That would make it the most expensive handset in Apple’s lineup, with a price over $1,200. The super-slim version of the iPhone 17 allegedly will debut in September 2025.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard that Apple is prepping a thinner handset. Haitong International Technology Research analyst Jeff Pu recently predicted that Apple will replace the iPhone 17 Plus with a “Slim” model in 2025. This supposedly will have a 6.6-inch screen.

Slimming down

The components that make the M4 iPad Pro so very svelte would seem to translate to a sleeker iPhone.

The new tablet uses a very slim tandem OLED display. Plus, it packs a new Apple processor that is so much more efficient than its predecessors that designers built a smaller battery into the tablet while keeping battery life the same. (Or actually slightly better, based on Cult of Mac‘s initial hands-on testing of the M4 iPad Pro.)

Looking ahead to iPhone 17

Despite the device being well over a year away, other details of the iPhone 17 series already leaked out. iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly will include a 6.9-inch display, up from the current 6.7-inch one. This version will also come with a narrower Dynamic Island screen cutout.

Previous rumors suggest all iPhone 17 variants will sport ProMotion displays with always-on support.
