A new report Wednesday from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) revisits the group’s recent finding that Android users increasingly switched to iPhone in recent years and gets into the reasons why.
It gave four specific major reasons and a fifth vague but important one, below.
Top 5 reasons Android users switch to iPhone
Earlier in May, CIRP reported that Android users are increasingly switching to iPhone. And the switch rate of 10% to 15% over the past several years has accelerated over the past several quarters.
In its new report, “Why Android users switch to iPhone,” it reflects on the reasons Android users give for making the switch.
“The reasons are diverse and confusing, and for some buyers they include the desire to use iMessage and FaceTime among family and friends,” CIRP said. And yet teens wanting blue text bubbles instead of green ones isn’t even mentioned among the top reasons.
“For the iPhone buyers that previously owned an Android smartphone, we ask the reason why they switched operating systems,” the group added. “Some could not articulate why they made the change — they just “wanted something new” [included below as No. 5]:
- Prior phone problems: Their old phone did not serve them, because it was aging, needed repair, or had some deficiency that affected their user experience.
- New phone features: They wanted more and different ways to use their smartphone, like a better camera, enhanced accessory options, or a more intuitive user interface.
- Cost: They could spend less on a new iPhone than they expected or than on a comparable Android smartphone.
- Community connecting: They wanted a smartphone that integrates with family and friends, including using iMessage and FaceTime on iOS.
- No firm reason: Just “wanted something new.”
The No. 1 reason above is by far the biggest reason, CIRP added.
“For buyers that had a specific reason, slightly more than one-half highlighted a problem with their prior phone,” it noted, with its pie chart showing 53%. “Specific reasons included problems with connections, battery life or other essential functional attributes of using the device.”
And as for the fifth reason CIRP mentioned and we tacked onto its list of four, when the “something new” is a fabulous iPhone 14 or the like, just wanting that seems like a perfectly good reason to switch.
