When will your state let you add your ID to Apple Wallet?

When will you be able to add your driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on your iPhone? In the United States, it varies by where you live. It’s not up to Apple: Each state and territory maintains a completely independent registry of drivers and identification cards, so each one must independently pass legislation and implement digital IDs.

If you live in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia or Maryland, you can do it today. (Our guide will show you how to add your driver’s license to Apple Wallet.) Otherwise, check our map and lists below to see how likely your state is to let you add your ID to Apple Wallet, and when it might happen.

When will you be able to add your driver’s license/ID to Apple Wallet?

Just like stashing a credit card in Apple Wallet, carrying around a digital version of your driver’s license or state ID can prove convenient. Yes, there are limitations: A digital driver’s license probably won’t get you through an encounter with a police officer who pulls you over.

But there are also clear benefits. For instance, Transportation Security Agency does accept digital IDs. And adding your ID to Apple Wallet is clearly the way of the future.

So, which states are next in line to allow digital driver’s licenses and state IDs?

Digital ID, but not inside Apple Wallet

The following states have a digital ID system available, but they are not compatible with Apple Wallet. You need to download the state’s app.

Oklahoma and Utah were among the states announced by Apple as coming to Apple Wallet. Unfortunately, many of the digital ID apps are developed by Idemia, which has its own system that doesn’t link to Apple Wallet.

Don’t get depressed that this is the best you’ll ever get if you live in one of these states, though. These things are not mutually exclusive, and support can be added in the future. Idemia also makes an app for Arizona, one of the states fully supported in Apple Wallet.

Pledged support, radio silence ever since

These states/regions were also announced as coming to Apple Wallet, but no news has come since.

What can you do?

Your options for pushing the needle on adding digital ID support in your home state are limited. As these bills must be passed through your state legislature, the best you can do is contact your representatives and express strong interest.

Californians, just you wait. Gov. Gavin Newsom said earlier this year that California would issue digital IDs within “a matter of months.”
