Apple introduced iOS 15.7.4 and iPadOS 15.7.4 for older devices on Monday, closing significant security holes in a range of frequently used applications. Anyone still running iOS 15.x should install the new version.

Cupertino also released iOS 16.4 and the iPad equivalent on Monday. The updates for its older operating systems are further proof that Apple doesn’t abandon them.

Apple keeps older iPhones safe

iOS 16 debuted in fall 2022, making iOS 15 obsolete for most iPhone users. But there are older handsets like the iPhone 6s and first-gen iPhone SE that remain in use but can’t upgrade to iOS 16. It’s a similar situation for tablets like the iPad Air 2.

Apple is still looking out for those users. iOS 15.7.4 as well as iPadOS 15.7.4 close no less than 16 security holes discovered in previous versions of these operating systems.

That includes fixes to the Calendar, Camera and Find My applications. These new system software updates also take care of bugs in Accessibility and Shortcuts as well as multiple ones in WebKit and the Kernel.

And there’s more. The full list can be found on the Apple Support website.

The updates are for iPhone 6s (all models), iPhone 7 (all models), iPhone SE (1st generation), iPad Air 2, iPad mini (4th generation), and iPod touch (7th generation).

iPhone and iPad users can install these iOS or iPadOS versions directly by opening the Settings app and going to General > Software Update. Alternatively, the update can also be accomplished by connecting the device to a Mac, or to a PC running iTunes.
