Anyone having activation problems with their iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro series model should install iOS 16.0.1. Apple specifically created the update to deal with an issue in setting up its latest handset.

It also takes care of other bugs in the iPhone 14 series.

Squash an iPhone 14 series activation problem

iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max started reaching customers on Friday, and apparently some of them will run into activation problems.

At least Apple has a fix ready. iOS 16.0.1 is out, which Apple’s release notes say, “Fixes an issue with activation and migration during set up of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.”

The bug affects devices that are being activated on open Wi-Fi networks, according to MacRumors. Apple suggests those affected connect to a Mac or a PC with iTunes during the setup process.

Fixes Messages and FaceTime problems

An Apple support document covers activation problems with iMessage and FaceTime that might crop up after setting up the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series. This prevents texts and calls from being made, or it might give the iPhone user the dreaded green message bubble.

The solution is to “update to the latest version of iOS to address the issue,” according to Apple.

iOS 16.0.1 also fixes bugs related to enterprise single sign-on apps and zooming in on photos in landscape orientation on Apple’s latest handsets.

Users of iPhone 13 and earlier models shouldn’t go looking for iOS 16.0.1. The update is only for the new 2022 models, as the bugs being fixed only affect the three devices that launched Friday.
