iPhone 14 models require eSIM rather than physical SIM cards. That means those getting Apple’s latest handsets have to activate them via eSIM – they can’t simply plug in a SIM card to get connected to a wireless network.
It’s new to many iPhone users, but Apple released a video that explains how to activate an eSIM on an iPhone.
What is eSIM?
The difference between a SIM card and an electronic SIM is similar to the difference between an SD card and a Mac’s storage drive. They both do the same thing, but only one is a removable card and that makes it more limited.
Up to eight eSIMs can be installed on an iPhone. And two phone numbers can be active at the same time, so a work phone and a personal phone can be the same device.
eSIM support in iOS isn’t new – every Apple model since the iPhone XS supports the tech. The difference with the iPhone 14 series models now available in the United States is that they only support eSIM and do not have a SIM card slot.
How to set up an eSIM
Apple’s basic instructions for using this activation method are simple, “Setting up your eSIM is usually just a matter of turning on your new iPhone and following the onscreen instructions.”
iPhone 14 models purchased from Apple with a carrier already specified have an electronic SIM already assigned to them. Getting connected to AT&T, Verizon, etc. will be part of the normal setup of the iOS device.
Those who have an unlocked unit can use Quick Transfer to transfer the SIM from a previous iPhone to a new one without contacting the carrier.
