This 20,000 mAh power bank quickly charges two devices on the go [Review]

The Mophie Powerstation Pro boasts 20,000 mAh of power and dual USB-C ports to quickly deliver it to a MacBook or other computer at up to 45W.

I put this hefty power bank through real-world testing with my Apple devices. He’s how it stood up.

The best MacBook or iPad the Apple makes becomes useless as soon as the battery runs out. These devices can go a long time on a single charge, but they can still run out of you spend enough time away from a wall socket.

The Mophie Powerstation Pro is ready to fill in. With it in your bag, you can add many hours of use to your MacBook or other devices.

It’s not small – no 20,000 mAh battery is. But it’s well under a pound so is not burdensome.

Portable power for MacBook, iPad or iPhone

Mophie’s latest power bank is 7.7 inches by 2.7 in. and 0.9 in. thick. It weighs 0.88 pounds. That’s the size it needs to be to store so much power.

It fits in my iPad Pro gear bag, and goes easily into a backpack or messenger bag. The Powerstation Pro is wrapped in fabric on most sides to reduce scratches on other gadgets in your gear bag. The charcoal color of the fabric combined with the exposed black plastic makes an attractive combination… as attractive as a power bank can be, anyway.

On one end are a pair of USB-C ports. This is one of the few limitations in Mophie’s latest. Three ports would have been better, for MacBook/iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. Or MacBook and a couple of iPhones.

One of the USB-C is used to juice up the external battery. You’ll need to supply your own wall charger.

On one edge of the power bank is a power button. In my testing, it’s not necessary to push this to get this accessory to start sending power to your computers. Just connecting the device to the battery is enough.

Right beside the button is a series of four white LEDs to indicate approximately how much power remains. These also blink when the battery is charging.

Quick charges

The two USB-C ports built into Mophie Powerstation Pro offer a combined 45W maximum output. If you use just one of them, it’ll provide 45W. When charging multiple devices, one port provides 25W at most and the second tops out at 20W.

With a MacBook, you probably want to give it the whole 45W. But iPads can’t take in current as quickly so don’t hesitate to juice up your tablet and iPhone at the same time.

Mophie says its external battery adds up to 8 hours of use to a MacBook or up to 72 hours of use to an iPhone.

I put its capabilities to the test by recharging a 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Over multiple cycles, it was able to raise the tablet’s battery level 111%.

So it’s able to more than double the 10-hour battery life of the iPad. Another way to think of it is, there’s enough to charge an iPad from 20% to 100% with plenty of power left over for your iPhone.

Apple likes the power bank enough to offer on its online store. That’s not surprising, as this is a top-quality product. It’s well built and ready to add many hours of use to your Apple computers when you’re on the go.

That said, more ports would be welcome.
