The OWC Envoy Pro FX is a very rugged external SSD that previously topped out at 2TB, but is now available with 4TB of storage capacity.

The solid state drive is dustproof, drop-proof, and waterproof. It’s compatible with Mac, iPad, and many other devices. Plus, it supports Thunderbolt as well as USB connections.

OWC Envoy Pro FX is so tough it’s been to space

External drives add storage capacity but need to be able to survive the conditions they’ll be used in. And for photographers, those conditions can be harsh.

The OWC Envoy Pro FX is designed to take it. It’s IP67 rated and meets the MIL-STD810G military-level drop testing, so it can be used in the dirtiest, wettest environments. Or even the next frontier – it’s been to space and back aboard the Blue Origin New Shepard rocket.

The downside of all this ruggedness is bulk. The drive is noticeably heftier than typical external SSDs. Check the Cult of Mac review of more details.

The new 4TB version offers plenty of capacity for dailies or multi-angled camera shots.

The Envoy Pro FX supports both Thunderbolt and USB-C connections. Backward compatibility means it can be used with almost any Mac or PC spanning back to 2010. The drive also works with iPad models with USB-C ports, as well as Windows, Linux and Chomebooks.

The SSD can transfer data at up to 2800 MB/s. And it’s bus powered so no other power source is necessary.

The Envoy Pro FX is available now from OWC. The base model is 240GB for $219, and there are a variety of larger capacities, including the new 4TB version at $899.
