Alongside a slew of software updates announced at WWDC22, Apple said its Mail app will let you schedule email delivery and undo sends, among other changes that bring the client closer in functionality to some of its leading competitors.

That’s handy for shooting off emails at ideal times and for clawing back those notes you realize you shouldn’t have sent (you know, because you forgot the attachment, not necessarily because you said something awful).

iOS 16 brings email scheduling, undo-send and more to Mail app

Along with the many changes and improvements coming to iOS 16 and other Apple operating systems, Cupertino is applying a series of updates to its built-in Mail app.

The biggest changes let users schedule email sends ahead of time and, if necessary, take a moment after a send to cancel delivery before an email reaches its recipient. Undo Send gives you 10 seconds to change your mind.

All those who forgot to send an email when they intended or who spotted a typo, poor wording or a missing attachment as they pressed send should find the new functionality reassuring.

Those and other new Mail app features should make Apple’s native email app more competitive with the likes of Gmail. Several email clients have offered the features for a while.

Helpful reminders

In addition, the updated app lets users set reminders and follow-ups for inbox messages, similar to what some other email clients can do.

In previous versions of the Mail app, you may have starred messages of importance to go back to. Now you can use Remind Later to make messages resurface at a time you choose.

An additional feature, Follow Up, automatically reminds you to follow up on emails where they haven’t received a response.

Search upgrades

Apple also noted it revamped email search to include more relevant, accurate and complete results. You can see recent emails, contacts, documents and links as you start typing into the search field.

Now recent searches and other relevant information appears in a more visual format with colorful links with previews, document thumbnails and more. It’s similar to Siri-powered Spotlight search features currently available on  iOS devices.

The update to Mail was one of a number of improvements coming iOS 16, alongside updates to Messages, Health, Maps, Camera, Photos, Wallet and other elements.

The new Mail features will be available in macOS Ventura, iPadOS 16, and iOS 16.
