iOS 16 will improve photos and videos shot with iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro via computational photography tweaks.

The software update will add foreground blur in Portrait photos and improve videos shot in Cinematic mode. However, these enhancements will be exclusive to Apple’s 2021 iPhone lineup due to hardware limitations.

iPhone 13 will take better Portrait photos in iOS 16

On the iOS 16 preview page, Apple says iPhone 13 users can now blur “objects in the foreground of a photo for a more realistic” bokeh effect when using Portrait mode.

In iOS 15, Portrait mode only applies the blur effect to objects in the subject’s background. This gives the photo an unrealistic look in many scenarios. So Apple wants to fix it in iOS 16.

iOS 16 will improve Cinematic mode videos, too

iOS 16 will bring improvements to iPhone 13’s Cinematic mode as well. It will record videos with a more accurate depth of field “for profile angles around the edges of hair and glasses.”

This will ensure higher-quality Cinematic videos that more closely match the look and feel of a video that’s shot with a dedicated camera.

Since these features rely on the Neural Engine of the A15 Bionic chip, Apple can bring them to the iPhone 13 series through a software update. This also explains why the improvements to Portrait mode will not come to older iPhones.

iOS 16 comes packed with features

iOS 16 comes chock-full of features like an enhanced Lock Screen with a plethora of customization options, improved Messages and Mail apps, Live Text support for videos, improved Family Sharing, an overhauled CarPlay and more.

Apple seeded the first developer beta of iOS 16 on Monday after the WWDC22 keynote. The public beta program is slated to start in July. The new operating system should arrive in September, alongside the launch of new iPhones.
