The Apple TV+ drama series is based on the best-selling novel The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry. The story is set in Victorian England, and follows a widow (Danes) who moves from London to a small village after the breakdown of her marriage. Her intent is the investigate reports of a local legend: the Essex Serpent. As Apple notes, “She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.”

Claire Danes got her start on My So-Called Life back in the 1990s, and has since gone on to win three Primetime Emmys, four Golden Globes, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Tom Hiddleston is certainly best known for playing Loki in multiple Marvel movies and TV series. But he also got an Emmy nomination for The Night Manager.

Also appearing in the series are Frank Dillane, Clémence Poésy and Hayley Squires,

The Essex Serpent will debut globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, May 13, 2022. These will be followed by one new episode weekly every Friday.
