The first iPad with an OLED display could be in customers’ hands in 2024, according to new report.
There’ve been enough previous leaks pointing to Apple switching at least some of its tablets from standard LCDs to OLEDs that it’s become a question of when, not if.
OLED iPad might launch in 2024
With Organic Light-Emitting Diode displays, each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast. That’s why all but the budget iPhone have one. But OLED is expensive tech, which is why iPad (and MacBook) don’t use it.
Instead, Apple upgraded one of its 2021 iPad Pro models with mini-LED, a type of backlighting that allows some on-screen objects to be bright while others dim.
But a full change to OLED will happen in 2024, according to TheElec. If it follows its previous practices, the iPad Pro will again be the first with the new screen tech.
Companies working to lower OLED prices
As a primary reason OLED isn’t more widely used is the price, it’s not surprising that companies are working to lower production costs. BOE Technology Group, China’s largest display maker, is expanding its Chengdu plants with a Gen 8.6 OLED production line, according to TheElec. This is more efficient than older methods, saving money.
Previous reports have indicated that rivals LG Display and Samsung are both making similar moves for the exact same reason: OLED iPads.
Apple is widely expected to introduce a new iPad Pro model in autumn 2022. Considering the company typically refreshed its top-tier tablet approximately every 18. months, this might be the last with mini-LED.
