The 2022 iteration of Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference will start June 6. Apple promised Tuesday the event will showcase the latest innovations in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS — which is code for unveiling the next major upgrades for these operating systems.

WWDC22 will be online-only for most people, but a fortunate few developers and students will be able to watch the keynote from Apple Park.

WWDC22 will be online … mostly

Ever since the first WWDC in 1983, Apple uses its annual event to showcase its upcoming technologies for developers. Sometimes Cupertino reveals new hardware, but upcoming versions of iOS, macOS and other software advances usually steal the show. As such, WWDC offers the clearest official picture of Apple’s roadmap for coming years.

“WWDC22 invites developers from around the world to come together to explore how to bring their best ideas to life and push the envelope of what’s possible,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of worldwide developer relations, in a press release Tuesday. “We love connecting with our developers, and we hope all of our participants come away feeling energized by their experience.”

The developers conference will start Monday, June 6, and stretch through Friday, June 10. Virtual attendance is free for all registered Apple developers.

How to attend in person

Typically, thousands of developers flock to the San Francisco Bay Area for a rare chance to learn from Apple staffers in person. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the last two Apple developers conferences took place online only.

That changes in 2022. Sort of. Apple will host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the WWDC22 keynote and State of the Union presentations. But even these fortunate few won’t see a live keynote — they’ll watch prerecorded videos together, at the same time as the online community.

Space will be limited, and details about how to apply to attend will be provided on the Apple Developer site and app soon.

But the rest of WWDC 2022 will be entirely online. That includes information sessions, learning labs and digital lounges.
